Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is my first year remembering to celebrate the kid's feast days (pat, pat, pat). Any really neat things to do for my 6 year old Thomas on his feast day Monday? This sounds crazy but I'm going to buy him a Lunchable (I think that is what they are called, those silly, over-priced boxes of crackers and cheese). He always asks for them and I have never gotten one. What else should we do?

I don't really have any great ideas- I'll have to think on that a bit, but I just wanted to let you know that I love your lunchables idea. My dd's baptism day was last week, and I had visions of homemade white sugar sprinkled cookies with white hot chocolate and glowing white taper candles for her celebration- she wanted Fruit by the Foot.    I guess whatever makes them feel like it's their special day, huh?

Melissa,

We have a low-key, birthdayish celebration. I usually give a small gift -- maybe a good book -- and bake a cake. Recently I have also been serving an entree that my daughter or son would especially appreciate, but I consider that optional. I don't always give an explicitly religious book, but it is usually something I think may help the recipient. Examples of books given are books by Regina Doman, books from Catholic Mosaic, or an autobiography of G.K. Chesterton. Occasionally we give a religious picture or medal instead. One feast day we celebrate is always in Lent so we relax the Lenten observance that day.

It's very simple, but it works for us. I think my kids pity those unfortunate souls who only get to celebrate birthdays.

In Christ,
Deborah

for name days around here, we always make up a little play about the saints life and perform it for the child whose special day it is. Candlelit pancake breakfast and they get to invite a guest to tea. They get to choose the tea menu. My Evan Thomas celebrates his name day that day...my boys are planning a play about why St. Thomas is called the "Dumb Ox". I'm making biscotti for tea and we'll have Italian for dinner.
