Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone ever done anything like this? We are thinking of something along the lines of renting a cabin in the Hocking Hills in the winter, and planning some family devtional time, some hiking, and time working on our family mission statement. We like the idea of doing this every year during Advent (to get away from the "advent according to the world" atmosphere.) and continuing it as our family grows and includes children-in-laws and grandchildren.
We are not real sure of the specifics yet, like if we want to have a 'theme' do crafts, etc... I was curious if anyone else has done this or if anyone has any ideas for us! Thanks.

Never done this myself but boy, it sure does sound like a WONDERFUL thing to do! I have recently read of two places (one in the South and one in the Adirondacks) that have family retreat weekends and such... Not Catholic, but Christian.

I think doing something as a family privately sounds lovely. I think what you started thinking about sounds good to begin with, and then every year you can build upon it.

Blessings to you!

What a lovely idea!

We always go on a retreat at Easter. We sort of 'piggyback' on a 'grown-up' retreat which goes on at a Benedictine monastery. They have a cottage in the grounds where we stay and while the retreat itself (ie the talks) is aimed at adults, our whole family participates in the liturgy, which is lovely.

My only suggestion would be that it would be great if you could find somewhere that would enable you to be close to the sacraments.

Well we are set for the first weekend in January. (Advent just was not going to work with our schedules) It will be a Christmas Tide Family Retreat! We are leaving on a Thursday and will return on a Sunday afternoon. We have stayed at this park many times before so we are familiar with the local Catholic Church. This will be our first ever winter camping trip though! Now I need to start working on things to read, eat, do, and make.

Any specific ideas for me? Should we go with a theme? We've never completed our family mission statement, so we'll probably do that. I think a craft, some games, spiritual reading of some sort, etc...

We just returned last night and we had a WONDERFUL time. We decided to keep the 'plans' very simple because of the number and ages of our children. We did alot of spiritual reading, wrote out some family goals for the year, alot of praying, good food, game playing, and hiking. (Everyone 3 and up hiked over 5 miles one afternoon!) We hiked some of the lesser traveled trails of Hocking Hills and saw many frozen waterfalls and different views because of the season. It was great, and we will definetly do it again!
