Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for traditional Advent music, that we as a family can learn to sing. Any resources?

Here are a few Advent hymns online. If you want a book this hymnal looks like it would be great to have. I have been drooling over it and am hoping that they have a sale before Advent so I can buy it.

I gave up on finding a nice child-friendly one and made my own - copied the words and music by hand, punched holes and tied with purple ribbon. We sing the hymns after lighting the advent candle(s).

Donna, are you thinking of Advent For Evangelicals? Lindsey, from ENjoy the Journey, does her advent blog. She has just moved and hasn't started it yet for this year, but hopes to soon! I guess we can still read the "old" stuff on there from last year though?

Her regular blog:

Her advent blog:

Donna, it may have been Mary Ellen's site O Night Divine. That is the only Advent blog I know of.

ETA: After searching her site I found this post which talks about the O Antiphons and links to some CDs.

Ah, I see you updated your post. I was about to link to my post about the O Antiphons. That's my favorite part of Advent, and I love to listen to the chants.

I don't know if you are wanting Christmas hymns or not...but these books are very good! They have a devotion and the music for each song. And then the cd has children singing each song! It is called Hymns for a Kid's Heart, but there is an Easter book and another separate Christmas book. Here is a link:

Maria von Trapp has some Advent hymns. I made a .pdf file from Around the Year with the Trapp Family. There is also the OOP book Trapp Family Book of Christmas Songs which also has some different hymns.

I did some searches on the forum for Advent music or Advent hymns and came up with a few conversations. This thread had a nice list from Kelly.

Molly, I thought the above post had this link in it. That was my post on the O Antiphons.

Donna,

I know that eMusic and Amazon allow you to preview tracks before you buy them. (I am guessing iTunes does too but I have never used them.) It isn't the whole song, but at least you could hear 30 seconds of the song to get an idea of what it sounds like.

Try this link from the Anonymous 4. There is a snippet of the music at the bottom and you can download it for 99cents

I Anonymous 4, and yes, I told DH I wanted to get the St. Nicholas and Wolcum Yule albums
Amazon's music downloads is a relatively new feature... but I am willing to gamble on it

I have the St. Nicholas and On Yoolis Night by Anonymous 4. And yes, we really, really enjoy them.

I have actually been working on an extensive Advent music post for O Night Divine. I hope to have it up by Friday. It will have a bunch of the resources mentioned as well as some others.

One thing I tried last year and will do again with my 8yr old daughter is for THEM to make a songbook with one of their favorite Advent songs. They choose one, and write out a couple of lines on each page. Then go through magazines and try to find appropriate pictures for each, so that you have an "illustrated" songbook at the end. Last year I had hoped to do one song per week so we'd have a whole booklet to put together, but in the end we just put the pages into sheet protectors and tied it together with red and green ribbon. Hopefully each year they can take out some of their favorites. (We also did one with a more secular Christmas song as well).

Thanks for some great links above!

God Bless,
Laurel in PA
