Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our family is relatively new to the Traditional Mass and we would like our children, the older ones...8,7,6yr olds, to have a children's missal to follow along with. I'm thinking of something with pictures, words to explain what is happening and small in size so it's discreet during Mass. Please tell me what has worked for your family. Thank you!

I just blogged about The Children's Missal by Patmos.

It doesn't have the text of the Mass, so that could be a negative, but as far as pictures and help for what's going on, it's tremendous. And it would work for both the TLM and Novus Ordo.

We have My Mass Book

by Neumman Press (who also carries some other ones as well.) We have it in soft and hardcover. It's recommended for 1 - 3 grades. We use it for the Novus Ordo -- the pictures are beautiful -- but we will also use it for the Extraordinary Rite too!

Jenn, I'm *so excited* to read your post about Patmos' Child's Missal! I stumbled across it at Amazon the other day and thought that it looked so good (for my littles), but was hesitant. Yours was the nudge I needed.    (The children's "missals" that I have aren't very engaging.)

A friend of mine who sells Catholic books has said that Patmos (or it's newer name..) has closed? That there will not be any more available once sold out? (I have a brain at present, that is in FULL FLIGHT forgetful due to breastfeeding) and I really hope that I am wording things correctly, forgive me if I'm not. This friend has just ordered quite a few from what remains in their warehouse in the US as it would seem that is it, after it is sold out. If this is correct, it would be worth putting this beautiful book on the top of wish lists.

We've been through lots of traditional children's missals, and many of them leave something to be desired. Not that the others were bad- just that they were overly simplified, especially for children who would like to really follow along with the Mass- like First Communicants who aren't really ready to handle that big 1962 Missal yet.

My favorite missal for children above all, is the Marian Children's Missal, which has just been reprinted. Marian Children's Missal

This missal is great for even pre-readers since it has many color illustrations, and because the kids like to "keep up" with their siblings who are reading and following the Mass.

Anne, I would not be surprised if you and your friend are right. I tried ordering it through Barnes and Noble and they told me that it was out of print. It is still available here through Amazon, though.

OK, I'm hesitant to express my ignorance - but- is there a difference between a traditional mass and just a "plain" mass? If so, does anyone have a recommendation for a missal for a 4th grader for a "plain" mass?

Thanks

My apologies- I made a mistake. I was thinking of the Marian Sunday Missal, here's one on ebay, which I don't think is in print at all anymore. If your children can read, but aren't ready for a big grownup missal, then the Marian Sunday Missal is much better. In the absence of that, then it would be better, IMO, to go with something like the Sunday Missal Booklet.

Waverley, by plain, I assume you mean the regular Novus Ordos (new order) correct?    If so, than yes there is a differnce in the liturgies. The traditional mass, (tridentine mass) is the "normal" mass prior to 1962. It (tridentine) is the mass that Tricia was referring to.
There are many books readily available for the N.O mass. Does that help or confuse you more?

We have the "Marian Children's Misssal that Heliodora mentioned in her first post. We have the older variety and it is perfect for the littles. Even my 2 year old will look at it because of the color pictures. I believe that the description on Amazon that is linked above is very accurate. I also saw this selling at AllCatholicBooks.com. We have two copies and they both go in the Mass with us when we get to attened the extraordinary Rite.

God bless,

Now, if only Magnifikid would come out with a "Traditional Rite" subscription option!
