Yes, you read correctly, palms. It's almost August and I'm cleaning my dining room. The Easter Palms are hanging on a hook looking dreadful. Being fairly new to Catholicism and not having received palms in this way as a youngster, I have no idea what to do with them. I asked my husband and he said his mother always made something out of them. Make something? What? He doesn't remember....a braid or something, he said. Since my dear mother-in-law died in 2000, I can't have her teach me to make something. I'll be waiting for all you Catholic moms to enlighten me. In the meantime, I'll be dusting.

Well, I think what your husband is referring to are things you can make with palms when they're freshly received---when they're still green and pliable, you can make lots of lovely things: crown of thorns, braids, even a lovely woven bird (did that once many years ago).
Once they're in the state you describe (as mine are I'd imagine, bleached color and crispy?), I don't know if you could make anything with them. I generally tie them up in a small bundle and tuck them behind a nice picture frame. (I don't generally have a lot left to tie up, as I make little crucifixes out of the palms when they're green and those I give to people, take to the cemetery, etc)...
I am almost 99% certain you are NOT supposed to toss them out. I know they burn them for Ash Wednesday...

This thread offers a little more information. I agree with the post above. Once they are dried and brittle you can't do much with them. And a priest told us they should be burned instead of just thrown away.

Thank you Matilda for the link. Now I know what to do...just have to figure out how to do it. I have 8 months - Good Thing! Don't worry, I won't throw them away; I am fully aware they need to be burned.

I compiled a post with links that include ideas for palm weaving and such, but that would be only when the palms are fresh and pliable.
Besides burning, broken or old sacramentals can also be buried.

Some parishes collect last year's palms just before Ash Wednesday and burn them to make the ashes that will then be distributed at Mass. You could ask your pastor about this. I don't know how traditional that is, but they must have to burn something for the ashes and I'm sure other parishoners have old, dried palms lying around, too.

My mother always just tucked them on top of our Last Supper relief that hung in the dining room. After my dad passed away, mom gave me the Last Supper relief, which now hangs in our dining room. I used to tuck the palms there like my mom. Now that I also have our family prayer corner in our unused dining room, I have them sitting on the shelf behind our picture of the Two Hearts (Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
And every year I forget to drop off the old palms for Ash Wednesday, so we usually wind up burning them on Mardi Gras...something the kids really like.
