Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK. Trip is the head altar server. There are a few girls, and most are very reverent, but tonight at CCD Mass, one girl took the Communion paten from Trip (who is in charge of assigning duties before Mass) and used it as a mirror, smiling at her reflexion, and bouncing the light off its surface onto the floor and altar!

He is a bit baffled about how to address this problem, as it has never come up before. Should he take her aside before the next Mass, or should he discuss it with the pastor?

YIKES!

I don't really know, but probably being up front about it like taking her aside before next Mass would be good.

My son, the altar server, thinks Trip should discuss it with the pastor if he thinks the girl will not listen to him. He says for Trip to remind her that she is setting the example of reverence for all the congregation.

I'm sure Trip will handle it well. Sheesh.

I think that even if Trip elects to talk to the girl directly, he should let the Pastor (or whoever is in charge of training altar servers) know. Not to take away from Trip's leadership abilities, but imho this is a little more serious than I would think anyone expects Trip to handle all by himself.

Peace,
Nancy

Ugh. I wouldn't think that this type of corrective measure would be Trip's responsibility, because it is about attitude (lack of reverence) and behavior (misuse of the paten.) If it was just about a behavior, such as honest confusion about the use of the paten, that would be doable. But the attitude angle...that's for the responsible adult. (In our parish, there is a lay person who would help first. If the problem persists, it would then go to our pastor.)

Sorry,

I agree. I think the adult/pastor should address it. Did the priest who was presiding over the Mass the day it happened notice or say anything???

I agree that this may beyond Trip because this type of irreverence could trickle into other things in the sanctuary/altar. Its part of a bigger problem-either deliberate irreverence or ignorance and both probably need an adult to step in so it doesn't just become "boys against girls."

I'm late in responding here. Good grief, what a story!!

Hang in there Trip.

Thanks for the suggestions. Trip seems to feel it is quite difficult. He doesn't want to be a "tattle-tale" but he feels awkward about addressing the issue personally. With this particualr girl, though, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I agree, though, in the end he needs to take it to the priests. Thanks for the advice!
