Not sure if this should go in the Montessori and More thread or here.

My son is very interested in understanding blending colors. It started with Playdoh, mixing some colors turns the dough into others. Since then he asks me constantly "what does yellow and blue make?" etc.

We've also done paint. I would now like some markers or colored pencils that could easily (and accurately) display the changes on paper. Any suggestions for a good medium or brand that wouldn't be too expensive? I'm looking for something that a) isn't too messy and b) we can do in the car, as we have a road trip coming up soon.

And any suggestions on taking this further with a preschooler?

Not exactly what you're looking for... but here are a few ideas...

For "not messy" (in the car)...How about those color paddles?
I did a google search and found these and these.

On the "messy" side - my oldest enjoyed using colored water and an eye dropper to mix colored water (I used food coloring) but perhaps you could try these washable Liquid Watercolor (I've tried it before didnt' find it to be completely "washable" but it was a bit better than straight food coloring).

We like oil pastels (stick form) for blending with the littles. They get such vibrant colors, I know these are not good car options, and the ones I get from a Waldorf school can be pricey, but for one little guy you would have them for a while. I will keep mulling this around Jenn

What about transparent overhead-type sheets in various colors? That way he can lay them on top of each other to make new colors and there would be no mess at all. Kind of like the color paddles posted above, I guess, but possibly cheaper and you could cut them into fun shapes ....

All my pre-schoolers have had a lot of fun with colored water. I let them stand at the sink with bowls of red, yellow and blue colored water. They get ice trays in the bottom of the sink to experiment with mixing. I give them little scoops or measuring cups to scoop the water. It's always been a favorite activity.

Here's an old color unit and here's the Vanilla Wafer color wheel I posted there. That was fun!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. You are opening my eyes to other possibilities.

I really was thinking there must be some color blending markers or pencils. I know Zig has color blending capability...and what about watercolor pencils, do they blend?
