Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If you could only buy 3 music CDs for the season, which ones would you buy? I need to add to our music collection. What are your favorites?

Thanks,
Mary Alice in Kansas

Dear Mary Alice,

This is our all time favourite: John Michael Talbot's The Birth of Christ - I think the Amazon site allows you to hear snippets of each song.

Highly recommend it!

My next favourite is:

Celtic Christmas by Eden's Bridge - an Irish cd with hauntingly beautiful tunes. This site also allows you to hear some of the songs.

I picked up a copy of a Christmas Cd by Jewel at a garage sale. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it is beautiful- she even sings the Ave Maria.

Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Joy-Holiday-Collection-Jewel

I purchased this a few years ago per the recommendation of our parish organis. I was not diappointed. It is beautiful...traditional chorale.

However, I see on amazon that there are only copies avail for $48! Yikes!

Top three (this year ):

A Cello Christmas (Actually, this is my all time favorite.)
A Yorkshire Christmas
Christmas with the Tallis Scholars

An odd mix, to be sure .

I've heard that On Jordan's Bank by the Magdalene College Choir is very good.

I previewed a friend's copy before I bought it. It's okay. If you have a sensitive ear to music it might not be too pleasurable. My friend is a graduate of Magdalen and explained the whole study body must be in the choir, and not all are musically inclined, but all are "enthusiastic". It's a great selection of Advent music, one of the best, but just be forewarned it's not professionally done.

I've had a few experiences buying cds that I can't bear to listen because of off-key singing so that's why I bear a little warning. It's distracting to me.
