I stumbled across this beautiful little art book at our library. Crucifixion begins with the earliest surviving artistic depiction of the crucified Christ, an ivory relief from the 5th century, and ends with an oil painting from the late 20th century. In between are works from every century in a variety of mediums and styles, from illuminated manuscripts and book covers to etchings and paintings. Some images are more graphic than others. Some I found disturbing, others very moving. Many of the pages include brief historical explanations. I think it's definitely worth a look!
