I wanted to pop in and say I have been using the Simply Charlotte Mason Picture Study Portfolios for a few weeks. I purchased the “Van Eyck” one. WOW! I love the pictures.....I love the simple prompts and the layout of “this is how to do picture study.” The only thing I wasn’t quite as jazzed about was the actual artist biography. For my younger ones, it was a bit hard to grasp....I’m going to do some more research and see if I can find a different bio. BUT..the picture quality is nice, and the overall presentation worth it.
I know Jen uses these....anyone else? I’m impressed. I LOVE it when we study something and my children go to their weekly catechism class at church...and link something they picked up doing picture study with their catechesis! YES! Their insights sort of blew me away.
Don’t neglect art study, Friends. I have for too long....I’m back to seeking beauty again when life is super chaotic and difficult. I felt like God gave me a big consolation today by showing how my little efforts are scrubbed up and made golden by Him. (and Our Lady)

I love them!
We, too, started with Van Eyck, and the bio was a little confusing, but then we got Giotto, and the bio was completely delightful, and ghe boys were hooked! The bios come from different sources, so the one for Giotto was from Knights of Art by Amy Steedman. My boys love everything she writes.

I’m so glad you said that, Lindsay, because the biography was confusing....and I was hoping the others were better, so good to hear. I’m definitely purchasing more.

Oh, I really enjoy the Picture Study Portfolios from SCM! And I agree that the bios do vary - most are very good and the kids really enjoy them. We also enjoy the little bit of info about each painting. Sometimes, the little bit extra makes a big impression - for example, in the Monet folder the woman with parasol is Monet's wife, Camille, and his son, Jean. The kids really liked that he painted people he loved in that portrait. And it really impressed them when we read that after Camille died, Monet basically retreated to his gardens at Giverny and painted his garden in varying lights for the next 30 years. We talked about that for a long time - how sometimes we think we have to see something new, or go to a new spot for our nature walk every week. Of course, variety is wonderful!! But, we really enjoyed talking about challenging ourselves to enjoy contentment in our own little gardens - and how we might add variety within them like Monet did in seeing his gardens in different lights. We also observed how much time and effort Monet put into cultivating his gardens and that inspired some fresh garden planning in order to bring more beauty and attract more wildlife.
I digress.... 
Btw, I was so pleased with the Fra Angelico bio. It presents his priesthood and Catholic faith very favorably.
I really need to update my other thread because I FINALLY solved my *how-to-store-my-SCM-portfolios-along-with-my-other-artist-p rints* and I love how it works!

I love the SCM Picture Study Portfolios!! Definitely an easy way to add artist study to a busy homeschool.

Is the Fra Angelico story also by Steedman? I couldn't find much about her, but her books are reprinted by Pauline Press, I believe, in adition to Yesterday's Classics, so I assume she is Catholic. We really like her book of Bible stories and In God's Garden here, and was hoping that if the artust was in Knights of Art, they just used that one. 
My favorite bit about Giotto is how his great work submitted to be chosen from the best artists was a circle he just drew on the spot and handed to the collectors. His circle was so perfect, there was no contest, and it is still an Italian saying to compare something perfect to "Giotto's Circle."

My ds is always now trying to draw a perfect circle freehand like Giotto- and we read that biography two years or so ago!
Yesterday we were reading about the importance of the circle to the Sioux Indians- how they thought the shape had great power. After mulling over the question of how the Sioux could have drawn a perfect circle without drawing tools, ds concluded they must have had their own Giotto .
