Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DD12 is very much a perfectionist. She HATES to draw, because she was harshly criticized at school. We had tears last year when we aligned with the provincial curriculum, she didn't want anyone to see it.

She has been upset about drawing this year, but it has been getting easier for her.

Here is what she drew today...

I know it's faint, it's in pencil. The assignment was to look at picture upside down, and draw what you see. This was the result. My requirements of her for art. Do not rush it, and put in an honest effort. I do not grade it, it's simply exposure. She's proving to herself she is far more capable than she's been giving herself credit for. She has found herself looking forward to her art assignments...

Wow! Upside down?!

I am so sorry she had such a stressful experience in school. She is talented. I hope that you can work together to help her rediscover her joy in art.

One "just-popped-into-my-head" idea - would she enjoy drawing out-of-doors or sketching from museum exhibits? Either could be a fun art field trip...and she'd feel very "artsy" sketching from nature or copying the masters...

yes upside down..lol. the(in a nutshell) theory is it forces your brain to look and copy, not look and think it knows what's next. I read the book many years ago, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now they came out with a workbook, which makes it really easy to do.

I do think she has ability. I need to record her playing the piano! My word has she taken off with that too.

I will see what else we can do... it has to be in teeny tiny baby steps. I'll see if I can't get a better picture of the drawing, it's pretty faint. She was shocked at the result... so I'm thinking the artsy bug may have bit now.

That's beautiful!

My visual arts abilities are limited to some pretty sweet stick figures, so I'm always impressed with people who can draw well. :)

I think it's lovely!

That is just wonderful.

She has a talent. .......and upside down.

Wow!..

She need not worry about being criticized again.. Let her know, we think her work is impressive.

I agree with the others - your dd has some wonderful talent! What a blessing to be able to spend time at home and remove the distaste for art for your daughter after last year's experiences.

You might be using a program you enjoy already, but just in case, may I recommend a favorite little book of ours? I thought of it when you mentioned little baby steps because that's exactly how this little book works - in a very step-by-little-step way. It's called Drawing Textbook by Bruce McIntyre, but don't let the *textbook* in the name throw you. It's the simplest, most straightforward little book and is fantastic for short little lessons in drawing! You'll have to find it used if you're interested, and prices seem to vary wildly so it's worth hunting a little bit (I'd say that between $5-$10 is a good price for the little book which is quite smallish really).

Each little lesson (and you could work on one a day), there is a simple little pencil sketch to practice. Mr. McIntyre offers a very brief little instruction next to the sketch...very brief!! The whole lesson (read instruction & complete sketch) can be completed in 10 or 15 minutes and done completely independently!! Each sketch builds on the other. Mr. McIntyre teaches shading and depth, dimension, scaling, etc...all in very simple, straightforward ways.

I used this book to learn to draw, my brother and sister used it when they were homeschooling, and now my children use the same little book. All my kids just LOVE this little book - I think because it is just so unintimidating to approach with its simple format and short little lessons.

Well, that wasn't exactly an unbiased review, but the description of your daughter's year last year, her clear talent for sketching, and her need for little steps immediately made me think of this, one of our favorite books! I hope it was ok to share with you!

Regardless, your daughter has clear artistic ability and I'm thrilled that she will be able to nurture that ability at home in an environment of love and support!

Thanks everyone! She is slowly healing from the experience up to 5th grade, making leaps and bounds progress. Dh keeps talking about her going to highschool, but then he flips saying not at the expense of her selfesteem. So we'll see how it all goes.

This is her 2nd full year at home. She loves it.

Jen,I'll snoop for the book, looks like it might be something up her alley.

{{applause}} BRAVO! What a great job! She should be so proud of that!

There are such great ideas in the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". I like the one when you draw without lifting your pencil!
