Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wanted to update my Composer Timeline with some important musical cities. I was hoping that I could receive confirmation that my 'important musical cities' were correct. (I am very grateful to be able to turn to this forum to ask this question, thank you to Elizabeth and the others.)
Now that my musical timeline has been on the wall for about 6 months, I wanted to add a few landmarks of great cities to increase interest in the timeline. Around Handel's picture I was going to put a scene of London. Near Beethoven, Mozart's and Schubert's picture I was going to have something from Vienna.
Here are my questions: Is Paris the city of musical importance for the modern composers, like Sibelius and Rossini? I think I read that these composers went to Paris. Did other composers go there to showcase their work?
I was also thinking that Venice was a musically important city in the Middle Ages. I wanted to put a picture of the Grand Canal in the beginning of the timeline, but I'm not too sure. (Palestrina is very important and worked in Rome, but is Rome considered a music capital?)

My next question. What is a good landmark to represent the city of Vienna? I looked on line, I thought the Charles Church was beautiful. What would be a representative piece of architecture?
Thanks for any help and corrections.

I know other people will be more helpful, but I couldn't help think that maybe the (Blue) Danube River should be included, even though it isn't architectural.

Hey Helen! I consulted one of my favorite sources on composers (no, not Libby... ), David Dubal's Essential Canon of Classical Music. I do not see any mention of Paris in the brief biography of Sibelius. He studied in Berlin and Vienna. That does not mean he did not visit Paris, but I think if it had been a significant part of his life, there would have been some mention of it in Dubal's book. Look towards Helsinki, as Sibelius was very active in the Finnish nationalist music scene.

Rossini, on the other hand, was the toast of the town, as a well-respected composer of opera, perhaps the most-loved music of Paris...? Other non-Parisian composers did spend time in Paris, including Chopin, but many more composers were French and stayed that way (Debussy, Chausson, Bizet, Ravel, Faure...).

As for the best representation of Viennese architecture, I'll leave that to those more familiar with the city.

Dear Macbeth,
Do you think that Paris is a representative city for more modern composers? the way London became the 'chic' city for music as well as Vienna. (I'm pretty sure these two cities are considered 'musical')
Thanks for the help.
I'll make a note of that book.

Helen,

After doing a quick search on Google, the consensus seems THE landmark for Vienna is the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of St Stephan (13-16th century) in the city center.
