Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have a box of watercolour pencils, that I want to use with ds aged 4 until we see if he gets watercolours for Christmas.

Thing is - what do you do with them? We're not getting the results shown on the tin, and we have no instructions - this tin was bought YEARS ago and we're stuck.

You can use them two ways. If you dip the pencil into water, you will get a thick, dark - and in my experience rather smudgy - colour. The way we usually use them is to use the pencils to colour as normal, then paint over the colour with a wet paintbrush. This makes it look as though the picture has been painted with watercolours. Very easy and very effective, though you need to be careful to paint the colours separately (unless you want them to mix!)

We use a combination of the two methods, depending on how much color we want to lay down.

Just wanted to add that if you intend to watercolor your drawing, you need to start with watercolor paper. It's very frustrating when someone works really hard on a masterpiece, then waters over it, and the paper crumples up and wrinkles and dimples because it isn't the weight to take the water. Ask me how I know.

You can find watercolor paper at almost any Michaels/Hobby Lobby craft store, and in several places on line. It is VERY heavy.
