Does anyone have any ideas for a ballet unit study (for 10 yod dd) - my boys are doing a baseball unit study over the summer, as they are total baseball fans. I was going to try and write a ballet study - but I am so tired with #5's arrival not so far off.

The New York School of Arts also has lesson plans for a ballet unit study - they are written for a class but, from what I can see, the discussions and activities can easily be one one to one. Some nice connections with Science, technoloy and Greek history.

Maybe study some Degas and French words used in dance
I think there are a lot of ballets on dvd -- perhaps find a story you like, read it, then watch it as a ballet on dvd

Want to get the boys interested too? Ballet has its roots in court fencing (I think that's the correct term). Many of the fencing stances were adapted and used in ballet. You could look for a video on fencing and compare the moves with ballet. I only know a little about this, I'll see if I can find some info for you, but it might be fun for them to research further.

If I were you, I'd concentrate more on the stories of the ballet then actual ballet technique and study.
The life of a dancer is not an easy one and one can become very self-focused. I studed ballet and danced until my first child was born and I am NOT encouraging series dance study at all with my daughters.
But it's fun to watch and the stories are great!

Thanks Elena. We have taken out lots of videos and books. I am going to start another thread on Fireside Chat about daughters dancing - as I have the same concerns as you - please will you contribute.

Hi,
I also danced professionally years ago. I recommend The Ballet Shoes story by Noel ???Streetfield. These were delightful and relatively innocent books that I loved as a child. The story of ballet can encompass many things-French court history and Italian for one but it is good to remember that ballerinas were low class until Anna Pavlova came along. While the life of a ballerina can be very internally focused so can everything else -music, sports, etc. if not properly channelled. I remember the narcissism quite well but I have to heave a deep sigh at the complete abdication from the world of art that the entire devout Catholic and Protestant communities seem to be doing at the moment. But that is a thought for another time...
