Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would like to purchase a globe to have around the house (probably family room) to do some VERY MINOR geography work with my daughter.

With Daddy traveling the world over, it's often fun for her to see where he's at. We have a world map, but I don't think I like it as much as I would a globe. I'm thinking of doing something ala Lissa's Mr. Putty - I think ours would travel with daddy-o.

So, now that I've given you the saga...what do you recommend?

I would LOVE a "real" globe on a stand - one that is a lovely piece of art/furniture in its own right. Having said that, a couple of years ago my Dad bought the kids for Christmas a Quantum Leap Globe. I think they cost about $100, but you may be able to get one cheaper. I swear, though, that this plastic, talking machine (and I hate plastic, talking toys ) has taught my kids so much geography - country names, continents, capitals. There is a "game" setting where you have to find countries or places in an allotted amount of time. For a while after we first got it, dh and I had globe battles after the kids went to bed! I discovered I had a competitive streak I didn't know about.

I bought a globe from Toys R Us for about $25 two or three years ago. It's still here. The kids (and I!) like looking at it. Okay, I'm fascinated by geography and maps! I showed them where Iraq was when their Uncle Dave (my brother) was serving in the Army there. We've looked up other stuff, too.

We have a big wall map of te world now, but I still think a globe is useful for showing correct proportions of countries and the actual shape of the earth. You can also do neat experiments w/ a globe that you can't do w/ a map--like shining a flashlight on the globe while you spin it to show how the sun moves across the earth.

Anyway, I've been happy w/ my $25 globe. The talking globe sounds cool, too, though!
