We used parts of it last year. My son was just studying the 20th century. We thought it was dry. I like it because it wasn't so ugly and sad starting around 1960. Other books we were looking at were really negative. I also liked the agenda much better than other books that weren't Catholic or Christian.  Even thought it was a dry textbook, I decided to keep it to use with my younger son (unless we find something better between now and then).
PS-Something else is that it covers a ton of history and I couldn't imagine finishing it in one year. It also doesn't have much depth and my son was looking up stuff elsewhere when he found a topic he was enjoying.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. I don't think son will like another dry textbook, so I will look at my other options for 8th grade.
Right now I'm looking at the Kolbe and MODG 8th grade History options.

We used all of it last year, and my son loved it. We didn't think it was dry at all. Actually, way more interesting than the textbooks I had in grade school.

Our dd likes the book. I'll add for perspective, that she is not very geared towards studies, and doesn't like most studies, but she likes this book. She is 11 chapters in at the moment, and she said she thinks she likes it better than most of the history books she has used so far. One thing with this book, it has "section surveys" throughout the chapters which can be answered if you/student choose. I told her she did not have to, as she can have a hard time with studies and I didn't want her overwhelmed, but, she actually likes them she said, as she already knows the content better when it comes time for the last assignment the "Chapter Review".
She doesn't find the book dry. I guess it's all in what you compare it to. If you are looking as a textbook, and comparing it to other textbooks I think it is a nice book, and has a great thread of our Catholic Faith which enhances the Faith for your young person. If you hold it up against more modern history books(chapter book, story books, etc.) it may seem dry, but that's not necessarily bad.

Thank you for all the feedback. I looked at the sample of this text on Seton' s website and I actually like it. If some historical fiction were added to it casually, I think it could be a nice combo. I like that it seems on grade level and doesn't overwhelm with detail.
How would this book compare to From Sea to Shining Sea?

From Sea to Shining Sea has a lot more detail, to us it seemed more overwhelming with the amount of detail. We love the book as far as the colorful nature and the look of it, but it was too much detail to be reasonable for us. HTH!

Thank you for that comment - I see what you are saying and have that same concern about the level of (too much) detail in From Sea to Shining Sea.
I would like to have my son do American History next year for 8th grade and use living books to supplement.
Trying to find a good spine is the key. I would like the Catholic influence since he has not had this so far in a history book and is at a good age for lots of good discussions.
I am considering the following:
1. Seton's History of the United States 8 for Young Catholics (using Seton's lesson plans)
2, From Sea to Shining Sea (using CHC's lesson plans)
3. Our Pioneers and Patriots (using the OLVS 7th grade lesson plans)
Right now, it seems like the last one (Our Pioneers and Patriots) might be my best spine, especially if I want to supplement with literature.
What did you wind up using?
