Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK, my ever-transmogrifying "field trip" out West has taken a northerly slant. Any suggestions for just fabulous colonial sites OR sites having to do with American Indians in the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania? Hey, North Carolina would work, too (I already have Cherokee, NC, on the list).

Has anyone been to St. Mary's, MD, to the archaological and interpretive sites there?

What about Ft. Pitt of French and Indian War fame...does it still exist, and if so, is it "worthy"?

Boy, am I showing my ingnorance of the states north of the Mason-Dixon line!

Kelly,

I know there are sites in PA...but I don't know if they are worth it.

Are you skipping VA?

My colonial-history-buff friends really loved their visit to St. Mary's City several years ago. They're into the whole re-enactment thing, so if they say it's good, I believe them!

Post-colonial, but still good, is Baltimore's Fort McHenry (home of the Star-Spangled Banner).

By the way, when will you be in MD? I'm moving there in a couple of weeks!

I noticed that too, Jenn! If you're not skipping Virginia, I have a few ideas (it's in between North Carolina and Maryland, you know )

Hey you all,
You're awfully nice---and BRAVE to think of us---afterall, the travellin' School on Wheels has a motto: "Chaos is our middle name" I'm always hesitant to descend on folks (and because we LIKE our friends, we never stay with people...oh no, we want to keep our friends! ) That being said, it's always fun to meet up with hsers as we travel, and we've enjoyed it vastly in the past. This trip, though, is a bit of a whirlwind since we have exactly ten days to do it all/see it all, and still get to Wyoming where we have reservations...so, we're avoiding my favorite stomping grounds and home for a decade plus---WDC---and keeping our nose to the colonial and American revolutionary ground as we head doggedly north and then west. I'd love to do a dedicated VA-WDC-MD jaunt, but that may have to wait for the Fall.

Watch out, though, we may change directions!

Kelly, When and if you're in my neck of the woods, I'll come to see you!

Dh is from PA, and I know there were diggings at Bedford, Fort Roberdeau (sp?) and like you mentioned, Fort Pitt. As to whether they are worth it, I'm not sure.

Thanks, Jenn. I would love meeting members of this "gang" enroute! The kids are clamouring for that DC run in the not-too-distant future, so we'll keep you posted

I'm so slow, it just occured to me to check out Ft. Pitt on the internet. Duh! Also, Bedford and Roberdeau/Robideau/Robiwhatever. Thanks for the names.
