The Civil War is not my favorite history subject... at all

.
But we will tackle it this fall, and I am looking for one or two good read alouds... we will probably listen to at least one on cd.

I have been looking over recommendations at different sites (SCM, MA, etc), and there are not a whole lot of books for this time frame.
Most deal with Abraham Lincoln or inventors of the time period.

Would "Across Five Aprils" be too much for grades 4 and 6?
"Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry"? (though that is post Civil War

I only need a couple of good ones. Apparently I ran the Indian captive story theme into the ground last year, along with the Revolutionary War books on cd (but there were so many good ones....), so I have had a request from the Parties Concerned to ease up a bit in that regard this year

The Amazing John Tabb. Used copies are pricey... I haven't checked elsewhere; hopefully it's cheaper on addall.com or ebay?

Perfect for that age set.

True story of Catholic soldier turned priest who fought in the war.

Pairs nicely with Fr. Tabb's poetry which is prolific and free online.

Really wish it were back in print. Let me know if you can't get it. I'll loan you my copy (tattered though it is).

Jenn has recommended before this book - Reading the Saints: Lists of Catholic Books for Children Plus Book Collecting Tips for the Home and School Library. One descriptor says that it includes the listing for all the Catholic Treasury Books. I hadn't really looked at it too much in past, but am really tempted for just such moments as this...

Across Five Aprils is a really slow read, might not be best read aloud.
Roll of Thunder is way post Civil War - set in 1930s south/segregation/depression

Julie at Bravewriter has Arrow issues for both Freedom Train and Turn Homeward Hannalee. We have not done these as read alouds, though ds did read Freedom Train this past year, but I look to her Arrow list often for good read alouds as they are usually so well chosen for that since it is how she intends for them to be used.

I really enjoyed Chaplain in Gray.

Reading the Saints does provide a list. There is now a second edition. I'm wondering how different from the original, because it is costly to buy the second one.

The interesting thing is it lists 28 books that are labeled Catholic Treasury, and then it mentions ten more that are are consistent with the CT books, but not with the labels.

Gold Rush Bishop is the book missing from the list.

Thanks for all this great information!

I will get busy going back to the drawing board on this topic. I have my picture books lined up, but I need a good story to read or listen to as a family, so all this is very helpful.

Across Five Aprils sounds like it might be too slow, and I didn't realize just how far post-Civil War Roll of Thunder is.

I have my ds reading "Amos Fortune, Free Man" as part of his independent history reading. I didn't know about John Tabb at that point... I have to go back and rethink it all. I hadn't even thought about checking out the resources at Bravewriter.

I feel more hopeful at this point...
