The post office near the site where hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in southwestern Pennsylvania is again offering a special commemorative stamp cancellation.
The postmark from the Shanksville post office will include the image of the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel and was designed by its director, Bishop Alphonse Mascherino.
The Shanksville post office gets a few thousand requests for the special cancellation each year.
Customers can have their letters canceled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the post office on Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks which included the hijacked flight on which 40 passengers and crew were killed. Others can request the special cancellation by mailing requests to the post office within 30 days. |

I'd like to do this, but have no clue to how to mail this. Do I mail something that I want cancelled inside another envelope?
I need handholding here.
And while I'm at it, I'm working on stamp collecting supplies for ds for his birthday. Recommendations? Just simple stuff. I got scrapbook album boxes to hold everything, but we need to begin putting some things together.

Jenn, we are stamp collectors here. Thank you for posting this.
I found this on the post office website:
special cancellation
It has specific directions on how to obtain the cancellation.
Thanks again- I had no idea this was being offered.

Jenn, I forgot to mention, check out the "Guide to U.S. Stamps" book available from the Post Office. It's about $20, if I remember correctly, and lists ALL of the stamps the post office has issued, and values. A must for a new collector!
You can order it from the website, or ask at your local P.O., and they can get it for him.
Oh, and a magnifying glass! That's a must-have.

Thanks for finding the press release link, Juliana. In general Jenn, anytime you want a special cancel or even a regular cancel from a fun place, you obtain it by sending a pre-addressed and stamped letter to the post office offering it. This SASE is placed inside another envelope and addressed to the Postmaster of the post office you are requesting from.
Post offices do these special cancels on occasion and more regularly do first day cover cancellations (And they often give you 30 or 60 days after to get the cancellation). For example there is a current first day cover cancellation opportunity I think you would be interested in. - USS Constitution/War of 1812 Bicentennial stamp. You have until Oct. 18 to request this one.

For other cancellation requests (like getting a Christmas letter stamped from "North Pole" or Valentine letter stamped from "Loveland" you send the request to that town's post office. If you are interested in getting a special postmark cancellation, you should send all of your addressed and stamped cards/letters in a separate, stamped envelope to the Postmaster in the city of your choice.
Include a note asking for the special cancellation. The postal worker will open the envelope containing your pre-addressed and stamped card, remove your greeting card, cancel the stamp on the greeting cards you sent, and send them on their way. Other than the postage, this service is free. Be sure you pre-stamp your pre-addressed cards with the correct postage.

Jenn, was there one of these in the pack you won at conference or in the materials you got from Don in the session? He usually includes an older edition. If not, I can get you one pretty easily for free - though it will be a few years old, not the current year.

Thanks for all the info. Don didn't talk about First Days, but we had a nice conversation with a local stamp collector at the Manassas Museum during the 2nd Battle of Manassas weekend activities.
He gave us some info and some stamps, and it was just like you described--he was eager to help a young beginning stamp collector.
So, with this first day stuff, do you usually order it online? here?

 We usually get old ones from Don. So anyway, I haven't really pursued getting FDC at the time of cancellation like this. So, yes, you can order it already done, but that is not what I would do. I would buy the stamps from USPS and put one on a SASE and mail to the postmaster listed in those press releases. They will stamp it with that cool FDC cancellation and it will go through the postal system back to you. That is much more fun. It only costs you the cost of postage two ways.
I think we are going to do the USS Constitution one and give it our first try.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get cancels on the baseball ones without buying it - but there has to be an address - they have a deadline date (Sept. 20) so they are doing it.
