Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for a book to read aloud to my girls (8th and 4th grade) for US history. I would like it to read more like a story - perhaps an author with some literary flair? I heard From Sea to Shining Sea was pretty good, but then I came across two titles by Helene Guerber: The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and Story of the Republic. Nothing New Press has removed the racial slurs (which we appreciate) and corrected some mistakes.

Has anyone here used these books with their children, and did you like them?

Or any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Although I really like From Sea to Shining Sea as a textbook/spine, I don't really consider it to be a read aloud. It wouldn't read like a story.

I'm trying to think of recommendations that might fit your request...hmmm.... hopefully someone will have something on the tip of tongue. All I'm thinking of are more specific historical era read alouds not on overview of US history in general.

I was hoping to find something like van Loon's or Gombrich's, only for American history. I have TCOO, but it hasn't gone over too well with my children. They are rather sensitive especially since they have Native American heritage. That's why the books by Helene Guerber caught my eye since the more derogatory terms have been edited. I have Pioneers and Patriots and the history books Seton used to sell, but they are so dry and boring.

If you were to use a textbook for a read aloud, would From Sea to Shining Sea work better than something like Pioneers and Patriots?
