Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Great list! This is a tough topic to find good books to read.
Greetings from Antartica is a sort of travelogue/picture book that we have enjoyed.

A "fun title" we have is Bedtime for Little Bears by David Bedford (Little Tiger Press) - our close friends know the author.

A bit more "realistic" is Nanu, Penguin Chick by Theresa Radcliffe ( Puffin)

Arctic Song by Miriam Moss (Myriad Books)

Ice Bear by Nicola Davies (Walker Nature Story Books) - this is non-fiction, but lyrical and beautifully illustrated.

Since we are in the midst of this topic and I always search to find threads to get books, I thought I would add a title that is stealing the show here:

Poles Apart: Why Penguins and Polar bears will never be Neighbors: This is a very informative book about the differences between the two poles. Great pictures too. Says for ages 10 and up but I think it's a great read aloud.

My favorite Arctic books are:
The Big Caribou Herd: Life in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
Ookpik: The Travels of a Snowy Owl

These are good for 7 and up, or younger children who can enjoy a fair amount of text. The pictures are fantastic nature studies of the northern habitats and animals done in watercolor and pencil or pen (I'm not an artist!).

My children have also enjoyed Tikta'Liktak: An Inuit-Eskimo Legend. This book is a fairly short read-aloud or can be read by about 6-8 and up. It recounts the story of an Eskimo who finds himself adrift on a small sheet of ice with a polar bear! All the excitement of a survival story plus a look at how the Inuit have traditionally survived in their difficult environment. The book has a lot of wonderful black-beige-cream illustrations that have a sort of woodcut look.

ETA: One more I almost forgot: Night of the Pufflings This documentary book is set in Iceland and describes the annual efforts of Icelandic children to help baby puffins who have become stranded on the island find their way to the sea. The pictures are photographs. As a read-aloud, ages 4 and up. A fair bit of text.

This sounds like it might be a really good one for the Journey North study - as there are usually polar region locations and it would be interesting for students to really know the difference between the poles.

I'll add a poetry book:
Antarctic Antics

I know I have some others but will have to search for those titles.

This is very timely. We are going to be doing a short study of Antarctica as part of our continent studies next week.
