Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm considering using CHC 2nd grade lesson plans next year for DS to help with First Holy Communion preparation.

Can anyone tell me more about Tour the Continents? Pros/cons? What you liked/didn't like? Did you add to it?

I'm trying to plan this out as best as possible since I will have a newborn next school year.

My kids have loved it. I find it simple to prepare for; the essentials are right there for you. You could add more if you like, but for my second-grader and K'er it's been fine as is. My babe was a newborn when we started and it was doable. We've done it one morning a week. I didn't buy the map book that is recommended by CHC to accompany the study, but have found all I needed and then some at Enchanted Learning.

As I think about it, we have added one thing: at the wrap-up of each continent, we've made a a salt map with important landmarks. My kids are all about hands-on. And, our co-op has a "share day" in May, and I thought these salt maps would be a nice thing for my two kids to share with their little peers at the end of the year.

My children have enjoyed the Tour the continents as well. The basic course is quite simple with plenty of room for expansion if desired. All you need for the basic work are blank outline maps of the continents, a good atlas and either a set of encyclopedias (my early 80's set of childcraft books worked quite well) or supervised internet access .

I used the laminated continent map set from Geography Matters for the mapping. We drew on them with white board crayons as well as adding landmark pictures from online.

We also added crafts from Around the World:Art & Activities. Very simple crafts for ages 3-7 (meaning that most of the crafts can be done by a second grader without much help) using common household materials.

If your second grader likes to draw, you might also find the following Draw, Write, Now books useful.

The Polar Regions
Animals of the World, Part I
Animals of the World, Part II

Another vote of confidence from me! This was our favorite year of CHC. And I ditto all the projects that both of the above ladies have done.
