Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do any of you have any good recommendations on reading on the life of Peter the Great and/or Catherine the Great? It would be for my dd, 10. We just hit this chapter in Hillyer and I haven't done my planning well this time and am at a loss! I love Russian history, so I would be willing to venture down a rabbit trail if I can clear a path!

I haven't read either myself, but these two are on my wish list:

Peter the Great by Diane Stanley
Catherine the Great by Katherine Scherman (one of the Landmark history series, out of print)

While looking for the Landmark book I discovered there is also a new book about Catherine the Great in the Royal Diaries series (which is a bit of a mixed bag - I would definitely want to preview the book to decide on suitability):

Catherine: the Great Journey, Russia 1743 by Kristiana Gregory.

If you love Russian history then I recommend this book

New Frontiers: The Orthodox Christian Church Through the Ages Volume II by Sophie Koulomzin

https://secure.oca.org/OCPCItems.asp?SID=16&Section=For%20Ho me%20and%20School

245 p. written for junior/high school ages. Peter the Great is mentioned of course, but the book covers from the Twelfth century to present so the mention is not in depth.

The book was enlightening for us to read Russian history from an Orthodox perspective.

Kathryn,

I picked up the Diane Stanley book at the library yesterday, thanks!

I'm going to see if I can find the Landmark book today on abebooks! I am enjoying this period of history almost more than dd!

Victoria,
Your link didn't work and I couldn't find the title on the OCA site...I did find a used copy that was published in 1968 for $10. Has the book been updated or would this copy be okay to purchase? Thanks, this book looks wonderful!

I think the reason the link didn't work is you were meant to order from an incredible homeschooling family, whose struggling owner is a CCM list member

Try this
http://store.paideaclassics.org/

If it doesn't work as a direct link, copy and paste the link into your web browser.

The price new is $6.50, so I wouldn't bother with used. At those prices, treat yourself to Volume I also

Victoria,

Thanks! I put it in my cart and actually emailed to see if I could also order certain images from the Holy Week Icon kit for a craft for Little Flowers in April. I have some of the icon kits and they are wonderful!
