Hello,
My dh,son and I will be taking a driving trip up to the northeast. We will be leaving the weekend of Oct. 31 and will be gone for 2 weeks. I have an aunt who lives in Wilmington Delaware, which is where we will probably turn around and come back.
Can you suggest places to visit along the way? We will be going to D.C. for sure. We really don't have a strict itinerary and I know we won't be able to see everything, but, I would love your input on "must-see" places.
I read on the Mt. Vernon site that there is a tour based on the National Treasure 2 movie. We will definitely try to make that. It's one of my son's favorite movies!

I didn't know that - that sounds very cool though. We did Mt. Vernon two years ago right after the new visitor center and museum opened. It is a fabulous place to visit in general and you definitely need an entire day to see it all.

If you are anywhere near Richmond, VA the Pamplin Civil War museum is wonderful. Before we left VA we did some serious Civil War studies. There are so many battlefields and parks in VA. But, Pamplin is one place that can tie it all together and if you only have time for one place, ds and I vote for it!

Also, while in Richmond, we enjoyed stopping at Maymont Park for a run around on our way to my parents' home in southern VA. Gardens, nature center(my kids LOVED the river otter exhibit), fun.

All the museums in DC are great--and all free so you can just pop in and then leave if it's not your thing. If you want to hit religious sites the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is in DC as well. There is a lot of Civil War history in Virginia and then up through Maryland and at Gettysburg (in PA just over the MD border) as well as the National Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmittsburg (just south of Gettysburg). We love Annapolis which is a cute old town on the bay with the country's first state house.
We lived right in DC for years so feel free to ask specific questions about that area. Also if you search the archives there are a couple threads about visiting DC in particular.
As for where to stop between LA and DC--can't help you there but I'm sure you'll get some good ideas.

The Basilica is definitely on our to-do list. I will add the National Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton.
I believe we will spend most of our time in that general area.

When we were in that area this summer we went to Emmitsburg and the shrine for the first time. Definitely worth it - and as mentioned it is really close to Gettysburg. We did both the same day. The new visitor center (2008) at Gettysburg is really nice.
Speaking of new museums and such - there are so many NEW ones in the area which have been such a treat to visit - we went in 2007 and 2009. They have really done a wonderful job with all the new sites.
The new Lincoln museum and the refurbished Ford's Theater just opened earlier this year. It is well worth a visit - especially during this year of Lincoln's 200th anniversary. Also, Smithsonian's Museum of American History recently reopened after extensive renovations (it was closed when we visited in 2007  ). We did not give ourselves enough time there to see everything unfortunately.
