Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm at a complete loss right now (overwhelmed with life). I need a list of American History living books for my 7th/8th grade daughter. She read books about Egypt last year and she does not want to do Rome or anything ancient this year. She wants to read about early American history this year.

I know there is a list out there, but I can't seem to find it. I would really appreciate your help. Thank you so much.

That's exactly what I am doing this year with my ds 13 who is technically 7th grade but a little more advanced. Then I have found that it works best in our. House to have everyone on the same history period so we are all doing it, starting with early explorers and through colonial and beyond, as far as we get. My ds too is not wanting Rome or ancients and either am I!

I used berquist's list from her book for both 5th and 9th grade and bought the used stuff on Amazon. I usually buy what looks good. Her list is far too long to buy it all. Also, some books are too advanced on her list.

Then I am supplementing with Ignatius From Sea to Shining Sea textbook.

Do you have access to that book? Its different on her website because she includes out of print books in her book.

I can list some books if you need them.there were some neat titles for girls.

I also have that yellow book that lists all history books for kids of all levels divided by time period. Can't remember the name of that book right now but I can look in there tomorrow if you want. I am cleaning our school room tomorrow so I will have those at my fingertips.

Here are some ideas (aside from Berquist list in her book, which varies from easy to heavy):
Mater Amabilis Level 2-3 (keyed to From Sea to Shining Sea)
You could also choose a title per term from their World History supplementary reading to help relate what was happening in Europe during different periods in American History.
Serendipity's Along the American History Trail Booklist- look at the books designated for Big Kids or Family Read Alouds. Elizabeth has provided us with great choices!
A Book In Time has many helpful lists according to time period. I can't remember if they are specifically "living" books, but it's worth a look.

For some reason, I did not see these replies last week. Thank you so much. I was beginning to think I was alone in this quest I will take a look at your lists as soon as I get a chance. I'm looking forward to it.

Also, Ruth bump this if you want me to crack open berquist's book for ideas. I never got a chance to type it up for you. Give me a holler!

Ruth

I have just added some American books to Aussie Book Threads and still have more to come.
