Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We read a great short chapter book (112 pages) yesterday for our learning about the Cherokee nation's trail of tears: Soft Rain: A Story of the Cherokee Trail of Tears did a great job describing the fears, sadness, hunger and importance of family on the long walk from North Carolina to Oklahoma Territory. The kids liked the story -- really feeling for the character in the book -- but I liked it because all whites weren't slammed in the book (some helped out and treated the Real People fairly) and the book didn't overdramatize the story as to make it too melodramatic. An interesting side-note is that the author, Cornelia Cornelissen, is not only a former teacher but also had a great-grandfather follow the trail when he was 10 ....

Thanks Mary,

My dad just found out, while researching geneology, that a fraternal great-grandfather (5th or 6th) was a Chickasaw Chief and was on the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. His daughter (our Great-Grandmother) was 3/4 Chickasaw and somehow married and stayed in Arkansas. We're all really interested to learn more about them and their story.

This looks interesting and I'll have to check it out.

This is a picture book about an experience on the Trail of Tears. It is told from the point of view of a young slave girl who is sold to a Cherokee family and travels the trail with them. Eventually obtains her freedom.
