Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone know of a picture book or young adult reader dealing with the Franciscans that were actually part of the Columbus voyage? Thanks! :) Heidi

I did a pretty thorough examination of picture books on Columbus this fall - there aren't many true picture books on this topic to start with and msot have no information on the priests that sailed with him. The only exception I found was Leo Politi's Columbus book, The Columbus Story- which portrays Colombus' faith in God in a positive light and a priest is pictured going ashore with him. Nothing in depth. It is unfortunately out of print, but worth finding.

I wish I could help regarding a young adult reader - I'm betting some older publications (probably OOP, too) might include this. Hopefully someone will know of one.

I'm thinking this old Vision book Columbus and the New World by August Derleth would deal with the Franciscans who went along. It's OOP and isn't part of the series that has been reprinted. Has anyone found and read this one?
