Could anyone recommend some living books that would cover these two periods? A Catholic perspective would be great, but I'd settle for anything that doesn't have an ANTI-Catholic perspective.

My own search has so far been fruitless, so I'm hoping for the best with fingers crossed.

We did alot of online research when we hit this time. Just browsing around looking at Byzantine art, architecture, maps....

We also read a bunch of the 1001 Arabian Nights.

I haven't read these myself but are recommended by a reputable hsing Protestant supplier here in Oz.

Anna of Byzantium - Tracey Barrett Ages 11-17

Who in the World was the Acrobatic Empress? The Story of Theodora - Robin Phillips Ages 7-14

Traveling Man: The Journey of Ibn Battuta - James Rumford Ages 6-13

Saladin : Noble Prince of Islam - Diane Stanley Ages 7-14

the Bedouin's Gazelle - Frances Temple Ages 10-17 (Romantic story)

Seven Sons and Seven Daughters - Barbara Cohen & Bahija Loveljoy Ages 9-16 (Supplier recommends reading aloud and missing a few paragraphs as highly romantic)

And if you go to the above link under Geography Living Books search the 'Arab World' and you will see many more titles, I'm just not familiar enough with Islam history to know just which books fit your criteria

I'd also recommend the Jackdaw history packet entitled (naturally!) "Byzantium". It was pretty good, fairly neutral as I recall. Secular, so doesn't really take much of any position on religion, as I recall (but it's been a few years). You can order them on-line.

I don't know what ages you are looking for, but RC History includes some excerpts in the Vol II lesson plans. Kolbe has just revised their 11th grade year and have published a Byzantium reader. There are some books listed on the RC History booklist that might work.
