I know it is early but I am a planner. We are going to be making a trip out to AL this summer and I would like to figure out some places that could be fun and distracting for the children. For example... we were doing some research on petrified wood and discovered the Mississippi Petrified Forest which is only about 20 miles off of I20.
Does anyone know of any other sightseeing spots that might be a good place to stretch our legs, have some lunch, spread out and not touch each other  ?

The Mississippi Petrified Forest is in Flora, MS which according to the nice man who answered the phone when I called, is only about 15 miles NW of Jackson. In May, they will be open from 9 to 6 everyday. He said to plan at least an hour and a half if you want to see the whole thing.

As this in not my neck of the woods I can't say I'm familiar with site seeing spots along I-20. But I do have a contribution that might work if the dates fall right for you. I was recently looking at the Smithsonian traveling exhibits site to see what might be coming to our area in 2008. There are several different SI programs and exhibits that travel the country and are housed temporarily in local museums and libraries. The ones I have seen are excellent. I got all excited about this one -New Harmonies which is a study of American Roots Music (something we are focusing on right now here). I was so sad to see it isn't scheduled for Colorado in the next 3 years (may have to drive to Kansas this summer). Anyhow, I do see it is scheduled for Louisiana this summer. One of the locations is Ruston which looks to be just off of I-20. It would be cool if these dates fall in your travel range. And if you can go I will be so jealous.

How far up to Alabama are you travelling? There is the Ave Maria grotto in Cullman at the Benedictine's Abby and The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, AL.

Unfortunately, our time is claimed once we actually get to AL with family activities. I am specifically looking for those things that would be right off I20 as we travel through East TX, LA and MS.
My husband has been to Hanceville and said it was beautiful!

Well, there's me, Cay, and crawfish in Southwest Louisiana ...not but, near Lafayette, you can visit Avery Island, which is a nature preserve and the place Tabasco sauce is made. You can tour the factory, but the nature part is wonderful, there are beautiful birds, deer, alligator...you can drive through, get out at a few spots, then picnic under the oaks at the end. Oh, I want to go just talking about it.
Brookhaven MS, just south of Jackson has a sweet small town Main Street type feel. It could be fun to stop for lunch and just poke around a bit. Just north of South of Hammond, LA, in Robert, there's the Global Wildlife Center. Okay, I'm going on quite a bit here.
One more thing then PM if you want more details....the Smithsonian's Jim Henson exhibitwill be in Baton Rougeuntil June.

If you are hitting Jackson, MS on a weekend, I am told the Mass at the cathedral there is very, very reverent with a great organist and English and Latin chant. I've never seen it but was told that the cathedral is really beautiful.
The USS Battleship and a sub are in Mobile if you pass that way. (I'm obviously not sure of the highway).
I'm a lot more familiar with I-20 further north and into Alabama.
