I had planned to order Chinese for dinner and have the kids finish their Dragon to do a dragon dance and put up Ten Mice for Tet on the picture book discoveries and....  These were the things that didn't get done last year when we were doing our Vietnam study before Bill went on a trip there.
Everything got backburnered because of an OB appointment with no babysitters, but I think Tet is celebrated for a week or so, so I still have time!

Bringing in the New Year has very simple text but is a fun and colorful presentation of the Chinese New Year celebration. The author's notes at end are great for explanations of traditions.
My 8 year old made a rabbit lantern - though it isn't actually a lantern (just a paper rabbit on a stick). He is way more interested in what his birth year is (Year of the Hare) than the current year.
Has anyone read the Demi book? I'll bet it is good - but I haven't seem it.

We did the laterns that you posted at your blog Dawn and Andrew loved them. We did 7 of them and strung them across the big picture window.
We also watched a Caillou episode that we had on dvr where the Chineese New Year was celebrated.
We borrowed the book Ping from a friend but haven't read it yet.

Seeing this late, but if you live at all near a Chinese/Asian community, you might want to try some 'sticky rice cakes" -- they're called "nian gao". They're wonderful sliced up, dipped in egg, and pan-fried, for breakfast.
Here's my jiaozi recipe -- Chinese dumplings, traditional for Chinese New Year.

While I was on the phone with a friend who was looking for her favorite Chinese Take-out menu, I dug through my cupboards and found the needed items for a peanut-chicken-noodle dish. We said the grace for Chinese New Year and that'll do.
I really wanted to order take-out but I see a lot of eating out in our weekend, so I was a good girl.

I found this recipe at Cooks.Com. I added chicken.
COLD SESAME NOODLES
Combine in saucepan:
3 tbsp. soy sauce
2 tbsp. rice or white wine vinegar
1/2 tsp. dried hot pepper flakes
2 tbsp. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. creamy peanut butter
1 tbsp. Oriental sesame oil
1 tsp. grated fresh ginger root
1/2 c. chicken broth
Simmer over low heat until thick and smooth. Cool slightly. Cook 1 pound of lo mein, linguini or spaghetti.
Toss pasta with sauce. Serve at room temperature. Can garnish with chopped scallion and cucumber strips. Serves 4 to 6.

I put up a few book selections inspired by flying our new Dragon Kite. Our favorite so far is The Dragon Kite by Nancy Luenn, a Robin Hood-like thief studies for years with a master kite builder to learn the art of making kites to complete the ultimate heist. Things never go quite the way you plan though...beautiful pictures and an ending Marianna loved!
We went out for Chinese at lunch, then brought our leftovers home and rolled them into eggrolls and made beef and pepper lo mein, ended it all with sticky coconut macaroons. Yum!

I'm bumping this.
The kids and I like to acknowledge the new year. In the past we always look forward to making Won Ton soup from a recipe we read in Family Fun.
Yesterday we celebrated the Eve off. Our host told us that usually the celebrations are done on the Eve. The kids had lots of fun, they ate chineese food with an explanation to the meaning behind certain foods, had a picture book read to them, set off pop firecrackers, tried some chineese sweet treats and as we left got a Chineese red envelope with some good fortune  .
Happy Chineese New Year!! It is the year of the Dragon!

It's all about food here!
We've done more in past---reading stories, picture books about life in China, looking at the zodiac, etc. While we like to recall our favorites of these each year, it's really all about food! I decorate the dinner table with Chinese coins and knick-knacks from China travels that we've been gifted.
This year we have on the menu:
