Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We began ancient history last yr with my 11 yo ds and made it up thru Greece and had just barely started Romans when the year ended (we were both ready for a break)
I'd planned to continue with Romans this coming year before moving to Vikings, middle ages, etc. I was looking forward to a lot of early Church history myself but I'm not sure ds is interested in Rome much and would probably prefer to start with the Vikings. I know we don't have to do things in order, but I hate to miss such an important part of history (not that I ever studied it in public schoolLOL ). After this year (7th gr) we will prob. return to American history and/or modern European history so it may be awhile to get back to Rome.
Opinions?

sorry for poor typing; i have a bandaged finger (bad catbite at work yesterday)

Ouch! on the catbite.
I'd have him read Ides of April and Between the Forest and the Hills for his summer reading and then move on...but that's just me and I'm kind of laidback about these things .

That's kinda what I was thinking, get some reading in and move on to something he's interested in.
There's just so many good reads!

We did ancient history this past year -- started with the History Links General Studies, then did the Creation unit, and some on Mesopotamia and then Ancient Egypt. But at that point, the girls were getting a little burned out on the ancients, so we took a break. We read lots of books on Japan and then Ireland, and then the school year was over.

So, yes, I'm in agreement ... move on, and keep the interest levels up!

Has he read the Henry Winterfeld books, "The Mystery of the Roman Ransome" and "Detectives in Togas"? These are great fun, take place in ancient Rome. ALL my children have loved these books.

he started Detectives in Togas but had only read a couple chapters when we got sidetracked on something else and then we ended the year. I'd like for him to have at least a general overview idea of what Rome was about, besides the gladiator stuff, but I suppose we can always come back to it later.
I think he'd really be interested in the Vikings and also the Middle Ages.
