My eldest girls will be beginning 6th and 7th grade in a few weeks. They completed Saxon 7/6 this past June. What are your thoughts on which book in the series to use next? I see that Seton goes directly to Algebra 1/2 after 7/6 (although they recommend it for 8th grade). Both girls are good at Math.

I'm not sure of the point of 1/2. If you think they are ready for algebra, do algebra. I would .

We skip 8/7. I can't recall exactly why (since we no longer have it and dh is really the math guy) but it has something to do with the book itself not being very good.
Are they ready for Algebra? I think I'd just go straight to that if they are. We like Jacob's.

Alice,
Garrett is using 87 this year because we already had the book and test booklet. I'm getting the DIVE from Donna and we'll be all set.
Also because we're using MODG with him and Berquist recommends 87 for the 7th grade year (which is where he's at in Math).
I understand (from the MODG board) that 87 and 1/2 are closely related and one is as good at the other. It might depend also on which edition of 87 one uses.
If you girls are strong at Math, I'd go with the 1/2. If one is weak in Math perhaps 87 in 6th/7th grade is best followed by a refresher year of 1/2 in 8th grade. That's my plan anyway.

I think 8/7 would be good if dc need extra reinforcement before going on to algebra. The book is huge, or at least the edition I used. 1/2 is a pretty slim volume, comparatively. It just depends on if you think dc would benefit from extra computational practice before Algebra (with 8/7), or a more gentle transition into Algebra (with 1/2). MacBeth makes a good point, however, that if they are ready for algebra, you could just skip them both and go into Algebra 1, taking it as slowly as you need to. At their ages you could even take 2 years on it and supplement with some fun activities.

I don't think it matters which one you do - I don't think you would need to do both. We've done 8/7 but that was because dd was late start in Math, did 5/4 the year before and then tested to 8/7. Other dc, we skipped 1/2.

That's right. You could always do the placement test and see what it says. It is available online for free.

Thank you all so much for the great advice, everyone. The girls are eager to begin Algebra, so we've decided to go with Algebra 1/2 this year. I am glad to know that 8/7 is not a necessary prerequisite.
Several of you mentioned beginning on Jacob's, but I think we will save it until both girls are Jr. High age (next year).
I am so grateful to all of you for taking time to weigh in on this!

We skipped Saxon 87 with both boys, both who do fine in math (though don't like it ). They seem to both be doing just fine.
I'm not sure what we'll do with Sarah yet. She's in 76 in 6th grade, and we'll do 87 in 7th, Algebra 1/2 in 8th, then Algebra 1 in 9th. I don't want her to get too far ahead in math, and she HATES math and takes awhile to get her concepts, so I think she'll need that extra year. I will however be adding in extra hands on activities, plus some math literature, etc. as well, because she's a kinesthetic learner, etc.
