(Please forgive all my posting! Finishing up my planning for the upcoming school year.)

My 10 yo ds (5th grade) has told me math is too easy for him and he is bored with it and doesn't like math. I asked him if that was because it was easy and he said no, he just doesn't like doing it. We use Math-U-See. He certainly is good at math. I talked about doing something different a few months ago and he said he wanted to continue with MUS. Actually he asked not to do math at all.

I'm not sure what to do with him to challenge him. I feel like it is a subject he excels at and I don't want him to hate it.

Fewer problems to do. So for instance if a concept is introduced and there's 10 problems.. have him do only the odd numbers or something.

I always disliked the mind-numbing repetition of it. Which is all it is when you don't need to practice to learn it.

Well, with MUS, you have the option of skipping along at a faster rate, by doing fewer review pages. Also, starting with Pre-Algebra, there are honors lessons, which my son really enjoys. Yours might enjoy the extra challenge also.

Ok, so the simple answer is do less problems and move on faster. This was not easy for me to see because my oldest struggles with math so I'm use to him needing to do almost all the lesson sheets and review, review, review. I treat my youngest this way too . . . . . no wonder!

I agree with Aagot. We use Saxon instead of MUS but I always start the year by having the kids take the first couple of tests to see if they can just jump ahead. Doing it this way I've discovered that the many, many review problems are just drudgery to some of my kids, while others really need them. It's a good way to determine just how much review work is actually needed.

My math braniac child did MUS and she just did the first page (or two) after a lesson and one review page. Then we just moved on!

Singapore math is what did it for next math brainy child- he couldn't handle staying on one concept for so long with MUS. Singapore gets VERY challenging in their word problems. It is cheap and at grade 5 you have lots of wiggle room still to try something.
