I'm going to place a CHC order this week. I had decided on using MCP next year, but now I'm having second thoughts. I decided against using Saxon, Sinagapore, MUS, and Horizons. Now I'm thinking, what if MCP is really boring? I'm wondering if any of you design your own Math curriculum. Is there an organized way to cover all the topics that a second grader is supposed to learn without buying a math curriculum?
I'm imagining there's a book I could use or a list on a website to make sure that I don't miss anything, but I'd like to do activities or play games so that my ds doesn't know he's learning. He hates the word "lessons." He's into real learning. I know he is learning math naturally already, but I guess I'm wondering, how can I be sure he is up to grade level? Unfortunately, my dh and I are still concerned about that.

We love Month To Month Math by Marilyn Burns. I've been using it all year. It covers all the bases with activites, games, and "real learning" for math. The activities are simple and use everyday materials that you probably already have in your house (a deck of cards, dice, hundreds board, geo board, counters, etc.) Its unit study for math! We love it, and I have NOT liked any full math curriculum that I have found.

We have used Ruth Beechick's 3R series. One of the little books is titled Arithmetic and has a K-3 scope and sequence and suggested activities.
This and a maths journal and everyday maths was enough I felt - then my kids saw some bright coloured workbooks at an educational supply store and wanted those too!
We have also used some of her maths ideas, and the scope and sequence, in You Can Teach Your Child Successfully Gr 4-8

The first year we homeschooled, I designed my own math program. We mostly focused on memorizing math facts. I did use a lot of sheets from a cheap comprehensive curiculum for his grade level, but we used other projects too. The book series "What Your ___grader Needs to Know" helps to make sure you cover appropriate grade level material. I also like this link for grade level skills
The year I designed my own math went fine, but I decided to use a more structure math program the next year. (I often question if I know what I'm doing home schooling my children and math workbooks help give me confidence to continue.) We tried Singapore, Saxon, and Modern Curriculum Press for various children. Personally, I much prefer Singapore over MCP.

Thanks for your ideas and links. I think I'll just place my CHC order without the math books. Maybe I'll wait until the summer to decide about next year's Math.
