My 4.5yr old daughter is also very interested in "doing school" and I'm trying to find an appropriate math program to start with her this year. She can whiz through a Wal-Mart preschool math workbook in one sitting, so I think she's about ready to start with a more formal kindergarten program (at a slow pace though, I don't want to rush into it but feel she is ready and interested).

I taught 1st grade using Saxon 2 but I think I would like a program that covers concepts a little more fully. I'm considering Abeka, Singapore, and Math U See. I'd like something that doesn't use a ton of manipulatives but is user-friendly and pleasing to the eye. I'm not sure about Abeka as I've heard the later subjects have some anti-Catholic bias and I'd prefer not to support that with my money.

Singapore and Math U See are both very good. Singapore has colored workbooks and so is more visually pleasing. Math U See's texts and workbooks are all black and white. In the early workbooks, though, the kids are supposed to color the cuisinare-type images on the pages. I don't think that you can go wrong with either program. Another thing to note, though, is that Math U See's program is now bundled (DVDs come with teacher text), so it's a bit more expensive than it used to be if you could have done without the DVD.

Abeka -- I've heard that their early math program is good and visually appealing too. I would go with a different program, though, as I've also heard that they are anti-Catholic to some degree.

I have used Abeka Number Skills K with five children and this year will be the sixth. It is academically rigorous and very appealing. We use crayons, legos or cheerios to illustrate the problems as needed. One page a day. It has never been TOO hard and gives the Kindergartener a terrific sense of achievement. Probably the most important skill in K math is skip-counting. It is important that they understand what they are doing when they count by fives and tens. This lays a foundation for those all important times tables coming up in a couple years. As an aside, Number Skills K is not expensive.
