Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We've been thoroughly enjoying Aesop's Fables this summer. They've spawned wonderful discussions and the children will often remember one of them when a similar situation presents itself at home.

I would love for them to do narrations of some of the fables, but to read and then have them come to me one at a time to type it up seems so contrived. I have a 10, 8, 6 and 4 who could do narrations--what would you do? Have one child narrate one fable each day? Wait until later in the week and have each child pick which one was his/her favorite of the week? How many narrations from each child per week is appropriate?

So far, we haven't done any Aesop narrations . On the one hand, I feel badly because we don't have anything to physically "show" for it, but on the other hand, I know they're enjoying and remembering the stories.

Even if your advice is to skip the narrations with this altogether and continue to just enjoy the stories, I'd still like to hear your thoughts on coordinating everyone's narrations, especially if it's on a family read-aloud, and how many narrations per week are appropriate.

Molly,
I would shoot for one dictated narration a week for each child. Bind them into a family book and let the kids illustrate. While there is much value in just hearing and remembering the stories, Aesop's Fables are the perfect stories to narrate, record, and compile. Children need to see that writing is their speech recorded. It's good for them to have a tangible copy of their thoughts and it's important to model the writing process early. Then, they really will start to write on their own. Since you've already covered several stories, take volunteers to narrate their favorites.

Molly,

I tend to go for one narration a week per child, on a good week

Friday is our narration day, if just this is done I'm happy. The goal is to have something to show daddy that night, keeps me accountable By the time five children dictate a narration to me I'm exhausted, so that's about it for the day. Some of the children are very prolific in their narrations.
Yes my older children could write their own narrations, but if I waited it wouldn't happen.
