Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Book of Saints and Heroes by Andrew & Lenora Lang on his own? I'm not getting any narrations from him and he seems confused. Is it the book or do we need to work on some phonics? I have a hard time figuring reading levels on books.

I don't know the book. But I would first try having him read some out loud.. then you'll probably be able to figure out if it's his decoding that needs help or if the book is just not making sense to him at this time.

Yes, I still have my 10yo read aloud to me a lot. You might also try shorter readings -- cutting it back to 5 minutes/a couple of paragraphs -- with a narration at the end of a short reading. I think it can be worth it to persevere with a challenging book, but breaking it down into tiny bites may be what you need to do to move forward, for a while. It may be that after some time of doing this, things will click better, or he'll get used to the language, and take off with it.

FWIW, my 10yo is taking this approach with LOTS of her reading! I may not have to schedule that much new for next year, is what I'm thinking at this point . . . :)

It really doesn't matter if he should be or not. He is.

I'd be working intently with him on having him read aloud to me for short periods of time. Like one paragraph at a time. If he is struggling with more than 3-4 words in the paragraph typically, then I would move down a level in reading material and try again. Slowly building up not just his ability, but his confidence.

And I'd get his eyes checked. Just to be sure.

I think that book could be a bit much for some 10yos independent reading IMO. Would have been for some of the 10yos I've known.

Also reading ability and reading comprehension are not always the same thing. He might be able to read it but maybe he doesn't understand what he is reading. The best way to find this out is to have him read aloud to you and ask questions when he is done.

Thanks everyone for the help! I decided to move the book to morning basket and see how the narration goes at that point.
