Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have always used the CHC Language of God book with my kids and liked them. They are just good old grammar and quite straightforward, IMO.

My ds has done levels A-D. This fall he would start Level E, which has a different author and style. It incorporates composition with the grammar.

Has anyone used this level, and what were your thoughts? Did you use a separate writing program along with Level E? Did you switch to another program when you got to this point? Was level E thorough enough for teaching writing?

I personally thought that they looked as if they would give a good grounding for composition but my dd's found the shift in format too intimidating and baulked like a pair of mules at the very thought of using them.

We ended up shifting to Language Lesson by Sandi Queen which are a rather nice combination of workbook (which my dd's prefer) and CM methods (which I like).

Melinda - just throwing something out to you. Have you looked at Classical Academic Press's Writing and Rhetoric. It might be something you can move easily to?

I am looking forward to the change. DD10 looked at them, and said it looked like fun :)

I wound up ordering a copy of Level E so I could get a good look at it... wow!
the change in format is very noticeable.

The pages are much more streamlined, the print is smaller and a different font, and the overall effect is a much more "clean" looking page.

The book is broken down into 4 parts:
Parts of Speech
Usage
Mechanics
Composition

Composition includes writing along with proofreading/editing passages.
It is last in the book, taking up 50 of the 150 pages.

Much to ds's delight, the overall content appears to be much less religious in nature. (He gets frustrated when everything has to be religious in some way). So while the religious content is still there, it seems more natural...
as if the author just happened to be talking about Fr. Dennis and the Eucharist instead of trying to find a way to make Fr. Dennis and the Eucharist part of teaching about adjectives.

Overall, ds thinks he can deal with this new look. He sat down and looked all through the book without becoming hysterical or howling at the pages, etc.... (11 year boy thing... at least at my house).

So we'll give it a whirl, and this thread has given me some back-up plan ideas
