Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I posted an update below!!
What do you do when your 11 year old Ds (starting 6th grade) spells the same, if not worse, as your 8 year old Ds (starting 3rd grade)? Tried every type of spelling program out there! I can't get him to tell me what works, what doesn't, why spelling is hard for him. It is a huge problem for him daily not being able to spell! He takes notes at his scout meetings and gets home and can't read what he wrote. He can't take a message or write a note to someone. I am not sure where to go from here. I could write a novel of our spelling journey, but the above sums it up. We are both frustrated!

Has your spelling journey included All About Spelling? My dd (6th grade) was spelling nothing correctly until last year, and my dd (4th grade) was more advanced. Older dd has dyslexia. AAS has made a huge difference. We are only on level 2 (dd 4th grade is on level 3), and oldest dd has enough spelling rules in her head that she can think it through when spelling.

Perhaps I should list everything that we have used or looked at.

All About Spelling (He found it had too many activities and learning the rules impossible and we spent two years on it with zero improvement from our starting point.)

Spelling Plus (Ok, but list too long and overwhelmed him.)

Spelling Power (Using now, best out of everything we used, but he gets upset when he misses words and they test first then study missed words. He hates the method of studying, but we saw small improvements with this program. It goes smoothly with a list he can do easily, but the last two list have been hard and we test daily and study the same words. I don't know how to get him over the words he can't seem to learn.)

Spelling Wisdom (I just get the big eyes when I bring this out. Tears will follow. No idea why!)

Apples and Pears (Looks good, but I stopped when we came to the dictation sentences "I am more of a drinker than a thinker, said the sad clown.")

CHC speller (This was ok, and we used it first, and he got list correct, but didn't remember anything after that. We swithced to AAS. My youngest uses this program and does fine with it.)

One other program that I can't think of, but it was too confusing and I sent it back.

I really would like to do Spelling Wisdom with him, but he hates it and won't tell me why. I am thinking about using CHC as he enjoys workbooks and perhaps this would be an easier way to study the words. His biggest problem is he hates to study spelling words. I have told him there is no way around that, but we can use the method he favors the most . . . . . and this is when I get the blank stares.

What about how to teach spelling or sequential spelling? Maybe the "tests" in ss wouldn't work for him if he gets upset but otoh if it's a "test" everyday, maybe he wouldn't take it so hard.

My 10 yo daughter is frustrated with her spelling ability, as am I. She won't write because she has such trouble with spelling and even if I tell her just to try and not worry, she is such a perfectionist and just won't try for fear of being wrong. We also started AAS, but she found it too "babyish". Just today I bought Sequential Spelling and we completed the first 4 days of lessons in about 30 minutes.

I didn't frame them as test, just lists. She actually did pretty good and I think it boosted her confidence. In the process of correcting misspellings, you can go over various spelling rules.

This was only the first day, but I think we may like it!

I know I looked at Sequential Spelling before, but I can't remember why I didn't go with it at the time. I looked at it online last night and it gives a good sample to give it a try first. I guess we will give it a try. They have the first three books on DVD, which I will have him look at too.

I was able to search this forum last night and found lots of similiar post. Funny how many of us struggle with this with no solutions. I don't know if I should lay off and just let it go? I think spelling is important, but I have learned to spell more in my adult life than as a child in grade school.

We're working on it because she wants to. If she was really objecting and hating it I probably wouldn't push. Her feeling bad about her ability to spell keeps her from writing anything, which I'm not happy about, but if he still writes, that's great!

Would a computer activity be more fun?

Have you looked at perhaps taking the AAS word lists and applying them to www.spellingcity.com?

Maybe he needs some incentives? I know there is something called SpellingCity.com that had games etc. I haven't visited since I got my higher speed aircard, so maybe will re-visit that as some of our kids have spelling woes as well. Oh...see someone just mentioned this previously. Anyway, I am trying focusing on the 28 spelling rules..which you can just google and Writing Road to Reading as a reference. Also, Sequential Spelling lists, and then copywork. Good luck!

What a difference a month has made! I bought Sequential Spelling for him and he loves it! No more complaining about spelling!! He tells me (and anyone who mentions spelling) how much he likes it all the time. Completely different kid! Thank you for reminding me of this program. Today was a much harder list for him and he stayed positive and carried on and is looking forward to Monday to have a second try at the ones he missed today. Unbelievable change in attitude!!

My 11 year old son is also an atrocious speller. It's great to hear that you found a program which worked for your son. I am going to look into it for my son as well.

One thing about this program is you start at level 1 and 80% of the words are way to easy for him this early in the book. We skip a lot and do two days in one. So, we do tweak it somewhat, but the directions say you don't have to use all the words on the list.
