Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd8 has a story writing PAT on May 12. She's written 1 story and is working on her second. I've always been a terrible creative writer so I'm not very good at helping her. I've been using Writing In Narratives, which has helped a lot. She now knows the 4 parts of a story: setting, problem, action/solution, conclusion. The problem is coming up with a problem and a good solution. They often seem, well, not very good. Does anyone have any tips on helping with creativity and knowing what makes a good story? How do I have a discussion with her about a picture and how to develop it into a story?

Well..let's see... I'm not very good at this either so you may not like my suggestions as they may not be very good

This is what I have done with my kids:

If it's a picture she is looking at that she needs to write a story about I try to get her to think of a variety of ways that picture setting may have come about.Something sad, or exciting, or tragic, or shocking etc..

For example: A picture of a little girl petting a kitten.

1) Sad---the little girl just found this poor abandoned kitten who is sick and starving. Is it going to live? Will she be able to find it a good home?

2) exciting---the little girl just opened a birthday present box and out popped this cute cuddly kitten!!! Will she be able to care for it properly? What will she name it? Where will it sleep? What if Aunt Mable who is visiting is allergic to cats?

3) shocking--the nasty neighbor next door was about to dispose of this lovely kitten by drowning but the little girl rescued it in time. Will the neighbor find out? What will happen?

4)happy--the neighbor lady's cat just had kittens and the little girl is the first to hold one. What is that like? Will she be able to keep this kitten for her very own even if they live in a small house? Maybe it could help catch the mice when it grows bigger?

When we go through enough pictures and talk about all kinds of different story lines based on something sad, tragic, shocking , exciting, happy etc.. the kids get the idea and can eventually do it on their own without me prompting them.

I hope this helps.

Jody
