Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My daughter is 6 and doing 1st grade work. We sort of follow the lesson plans from CHC. She loves to write and likes to do copy work when her older brother in 6th grade does his. Any ideas for good copy work material? I sometimes have her copy the "Memory Gems" that are in the CHC lesson plans for 1st grade but I am looking for something a little different. I guess I should ask if she should even be doing copy work at such a young age, but she enjoys it so much I want to encourage her!

Hi Becky!

Any favorite Bible verses, a couple of lines from a favorite story book or favorite poem would be great copywork choices. That is what I do with my own dc. Over the course of several days, they continue to copy a couple of lines down until the verse, poem or part of literature selection is complete (although copying just a couple of lines from several different sources is great, too!). Then, they can illustrate their work if they want to. Regarding whether or not she is old enough to do copywork, I would let her take the lead on that. My dd who is in Kindergarten LOVES to do copywork, if you can believe it (it actually shocked me!).

God bless!

(Becky - I forgot to ask you in the last post - how are you enjoying the CHC 1st Grade plans? I am considering them for my dd for next year. Thanks and God bless! Jen)

Hi Jen,
I really liked the CHC lesson plans but I find I don't use them as much as I had planned to. I follow them for the reading instruction and love the religion. However, we are using a different Math, spelling, and I don't really do science with dd. We just do lots of nature hike sort of stuff. We also don't really use the Phys. Ed. part and art is a "sometimes" sort of thing. (My dd actually loves art but does her own thing.) I also add in my own copywork and choose books to read to her from other sources. In spite of this, I am planning on ordering the 2nd grade plans for her for next year. They have lots of nice "extra" stuff and it gives me a good sense of where I need to be with her. As I mentioned, I love the religion and since she will be preparing for First Communion next year, I like knowing there will be some guidelines for that preparation. I've also heard that the Geography extras that are included in the lesson plans for 2nd grade are really nice.
HTH!   Becky
