I'm not sure if we've talked about this here or not but I noticed on Lissa's Lilting House blog that she has a "rule of six" in the lower left side bar.
Here are what she considers necessary for your child every day:
Six Things to Include in Your Child's Day:
• meaningful work
• imaginative play
• good books
• beauty (art, music, nature)
• ideas to ponder and discuss
• prayer
Now I blatantly "plagiarized" this on a post yesterday with just a slight change -- I moved prayer up and added Catholic culture.
Wouldn't you feel like you'd had a successful homeschool day if you were able to incorporate these six things in your day? How would you do all of these things? Isn't this a synthesis of "real learning"? Is there anything missing from this list?

Mary,
Forgive my ignorance but can you expand a bit on what you mean about Catholic culture. Is this living the liturgical year, daily Mass or am I not even close to what you mean? I didn't get much sleep so maybe I am punchy this morning.

I would say if we even got half of those in each day we would be successful!
It's a wonderful list. The only thing I would add would be LOVE. Gotta have tons of that every day!

Yes, CC would be talking about the saint of the day, doing a craft/cooking that relates to the liturgical season, etc. We just don't make it to daily Mass -- altho we often have the best of intentions! Also, two of my littles are prepping for FHC this year, so any of that would tie in too.

Mary,
I've been pondering this also since reading it at Lissa's site. The only thing I would add is exercise or something to get us outside. Because of some craziness beyond my control in our lives lately, I am trying to commit to just three: Mass/prayer, books, and exercise. The other stuff happens, maybe not everyday though, so my goal is to add one at a time until they are all a natural part of our day.

Hello everyone!
Just some thoughts on Catholic culture...
When I think of Catholic culture I think of the world as God created it or intended it to be, and that when we expierience this, we do it acknowledgeing His role in it all.
I would consider beautiful music, good theater and nature walks all part of Catholic culture...
I haven't really thought this all out yet...I am just rambling. But I feel that we can't separate Catholic culture from, let's say, the other 5 Rules of the 6. Each one of those rules is a part of Catholic culture??? It is our responsibility or honor to see that Catholic culture invades all areas of our lives and esp. those of our children.
I would be thankful to hear other thoughts.

I agree and that's why I list it first because it (and prayer) leads all the others. We don't live in a Catholic culture here (I know you don't either in Germany) so it's an actual effort we have to make. I also see Catholic culture as those things that are uniquely Catholic, like celebrating the litugical year feasts etc. But again these are things that we make part of our lives so as to foster a Catholic culture in everything we do.
I hope this makes sense. it's Monday and I'm still not quite awake this morning. . .  (we need a yawning emoticon)

I completely agree. My friends and family think we are a bit nuts to celebrate our saints days and baptismal days..I say why not celebrate..who doesn't like cake and extra love and prayers?
Mary G.-this is just wonderful..thank you for getting me thinking and talking to dh about putting down what we feel is our rule of six. I am hoping to print and frame our rule for our kitchen.

My dh grew up in a family , which celebrated Saint's Days much more than any birthday. This was Germany in the 60's...Nazi ism had not infiltrated every family, especially those with a deep Catholic culture. Yes, the war was long over, but the effects of Nazi thought robbed many souls, and that always has a negative impact on the next generation. Our Pope Benedict had a Catholic culture in his home and his surroundings, in spite of the war, he was unshakeable in his faith.
Unfortunately , in the Catholic kindergarten dd3 attends, there is only 1 other little girl and her family , which try to continue this Catholic culture in their lives. And this is "Catholic Münsterland"!
While visiting my parents in the U.S. this summer, we celebrated the Feast Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - name's day of dd2, Maria Carmela.
My mother could only respond - "well, that's weird!"
They missed out on a nice celebration!

I ended up asking my children what is it that makes them happy at the end of the day. It was lovely for me to hear what they had to say and why. I was surprised by some of the answers.

2. Identify and Imitate Someone Holy or Virtuous (Saints, Heros, Mom, Dad, Grandparents, or Strangers in the News)

5. Read...Something Good
6. Love, Serve and Forgive (First One Another, than the World)
