I saw some neat student planners in a Pflaum catalog that came in the mail today.
Do any of you use anything like these with your children?
And follow up question  - how do you keep your children on task with their work (specifically lessons) through the day or week? Do you have them take some responsibility for their studies?

Yes, I use the Pflaum planner with Sarah (our youngest and 6th grader). It's great, because it keeps it all in one place, and she has her own record then too, and can go by what we write for her to do daily. I need the subjects and week by week planner for homeschool, a plain calendar isn't something we need for her at this point.
We don't use this for our oldest two, because they're boys, and in high school at home.  One year, I bought the High School Journal for our oldest, and it was working pretty good. Last year, we used just a plain notebook, and it was OK too.
We're starting next Tuesday. I think I'd better decide what I'm going to use for both of them. I'm thinking I'm just not sure what I want to do for them this year.

Dawn, I bought a calendar/planner for my fifth grader this year. He wanted to have his work organized and written down this year. I am going to do it week by week with him on Sunday nights. He likes being able to check off his "assignments". Today was our first day back to lessons and he loved it!
He is responsible for four subjects on his own and the rest we do together. I think last year this never would have worked but this year he is wanting to do some work independently.
I did not use the planner that you linked but just a regular student planner from Office Max. It has a monthly calendar with tabs and weekly double spread for assignments. Ben went ahead and filled in all the birthdays he wants to remember as well as baseball games (Fall ball) and Cub Scouts on his monthly calendar. I think it will work out nicely.
Are you hoping to use a planner with your oldest?

Yes, he will be 6th grade and with the younger two needing more of me this year, I thought it might be time to ask him to take more responsibility for his work. I had been planning on using a 3-ring binder (with loose work, calendar and a weekly checklist) but I really like the look of those planners!
I like your idea of sitting down weekly to write out the planner together. That way you know you are at least starting on the same page!

I bought the intermediate grades planner from Pflaum this year, and my daughter loves it. She really wanted a planner, so I thought this would be a good choice. In the past, I've just used a teacher planner for her.
I really like the idea of writing out the planner together also!

This summer, his reading skills have really taken off so I thought it would work out now to have him do some of the work independently. In previous years, I did every subject with him. I think he was ready to do this because the transition has been seamless. Of course, I am nearby if he has a question or needs help.
He does Spelling, Writing, Reading and Math independently. The rest I do with him and it has worked out nicely so far. I expect as we get farther into the Writing book, that I will be more involved but for now, it is working out nicely.

I have tried lots of different planners for my children over the years with varying results. This year I tried the student planners from FranklinCovey.com They have four different planners: early elementary, older elementary, middle school, and high school. They teach the franklin covey ideas of organizing and prioritizing at progressively more advanced levels. My children (ages 14, 13, 10, and 6) enjoyed using them to keep track of their activities. They cost about $9 each. For school work and chores I have two general schedules (one is for if we are having a regular week and a much lighter one for those weeks when I know we won't get as much done--like grandparents visiting or something like that)for each child on the computer as a word document and I print it out on the weekend and they use it as a checklist during the week. I don't know why but we get about 10x more school work done if the children have a checklist than if I just tell them what they need to get done.

With my oldest two, once they hit about 6th grade, I just used photocopies of the planning sheet in The Home School Manual. Nothing fancy at all, in fact a bit boring.
They both loved having their lessons set down in front of them, at a glance, (although I never had them plan the days with me, like Rebecca does, and I may start that this year with my newest 6th grader ,) because they could get up early, and see what I wanted them to do that day. They were very industrious, and often were done by 10 am. My oldest would then pursue his passion for reading! And my next oldest would shoot baskets for the remainder of the day!
I did buy the Pflaum planners last year, because they really appealed to me. I am embarrassed to admit  , that I stopped using them after a few weeks. I was just so ingrained with the other boring planner, I guess?
We are beginning on Monday, and I just put down the basics for my each of my boys. I think I will run the 11yo's plans by him tomorrow, just to give him an idea of what I have going for him, this year!

Ugh! I was giving them a list daily, but I really would like an actual planner with daily lists, by subject (not written in, I would have to write their subjects in).
I can't find the right thing to use. I may try the office supply store later.
I do have the Pflaum one for Sarah (6th), but need two for both boys doing high school.

I know I am jumping in a little late here  but we just started using The Homeschool Tracker this year and I really love it! Well that was once I got familiar with the program and how to use it.
It is a record keeper, keeps transcripts/grades as well as student and teacher lesson plans. After you write up your initial lesson plans all you have to do is print it out for the student one day at a time or one week or one month if you like. And the neat thing is the lessons will be there for the next child that reaches that level. There is such flexibility in that you can set the program up anyway you want. I have traditional lesson plans and unit study lesson plans. For organization junkies like myself this program is a winner!!
Oh did I mention the basic edition is entirely FREE? But the Plus edition is well worth the price.

Did you ever get one of these planners Dawn? They are very colorful and I know my dd would love one, however se wouldn't need all the Catholic info.
Right now my dd just goes off of my master list for the week and then writes out her own list but she would like something like this.

Well, I didn't, but only because they had already sold out when I went to order them! I guess next year I'll have to remember to order earlier in the summer.

My dd (10) does most of her work off a master sheet that I created (on Excel). We've tried the planners (CHC I think) but it was a little too much busy work for her. She just likes to know what's next and then she tackles it on her own!
My ds (8) also has a written master sheet, but he never looks at it . Basically he just works off the white board that I make up each morning for the flow of our day. We're pretty standard in our approach with morning Math, Latin, Religion, Dictation/Copywork...and then whatever other subjects we have pegged for that particular day!

Bumping to say that we got the Pflaum planners for my kids about a month ago and I just love them. A group of us got together to place an order so they were only about $5 each. So affordable, very nice, and thoroughly Catholic.

I bought mine, too. I really enjoyed the one we had last year. This year my dd is old enough for her own. I think one of the book companies... Adoremus?- had them last summer for the really low price ($3-4) but I tried to find them for several weeks before giving up and ordering from Pflaum.

My children really liked their planners from Pflaum too the one year that I purchased them.
But, our hands down all time favorite ever...
"My Catholic Homeschool Weekly Lesson Planner I"

There was also a Family one they made for like 4 students that I used more than one year. But a long time ago. I have no idea what happened to this family. Does anyone happen to know?
I would love to be able to purchase these planners again.

I realize this is awfully late -- but if you are into designing your own planners, I've created a cd-rom Design-a-Planner in which you can design a number of planners or journals: student/homeschool/spiritual life/ gardening/parenting/household/chores, etc.
In fact, it just so happens that we are hosting a draw right now.
