Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was searching for info on Baden Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts, for my son who had to prepare something before leaving for camp this week. Powell's was an amazing life. The idea for scouting came from his experience in the army where recruits knew nothing about anything and Powell worried that if they lost their captains they would be like lost sheep. So he taught them how to survive, find their way in the woods, etc: how to "scout." The movement to an organization happened without much direction from Powell at first. "It just growed," he said. Here is the part that cracked me up:

"Also, from experience of the Boys' Brigade, I realised that men could be got voluntarily to sacrifice time and energy to training boys. Then my idea that Scouting could be educative was strengthened also, through the following incident. General Lord Allenby was riding to his house after a field day when his little son shouted to him, 'Father, I have shot you, you are not half a Scout. A Scout looks upward as well as around him - you never saw me.' There was the boy, sitting up in a tree overhead; but far above him, near the top of the tree, was his new governess. (emphasis mine) 'What on earth are you doing up there?' cried the General. 'Oh, I am teaching him Scouting,' she said. She had been trained at Miss Charlotte Mason's Collage for Teachers, and they had been using my book, Aids to Scouting, written for soldiers, as a textbook in the art of educating children. "

I need to get up that tree a little more with my kids!

And that is why I love Charlotte Mason . What other educationalist - yet alone a Victorian / Edwardian one - would have set a book like Aids to Scouting as a textbook. And I bet she would have approved of the governess being up the tree .

I always liked that story, and often find myself repeating it to DH whenever he asks questions on the benefits of scouting or CM
