Do I need the Saxon 3 manipulatives kit to make the program worthwhile? I have never used Saxon in the younger grades....I have always used 5/4 and above. Looking through the teachers guide I am pretty overwhelmed and wondering if the manipulatives are needed? My grade 3 kids are very average in their math abilities.

Mmmm, I did saxon 3last year and although thee are manipulative so used I think you could easily improvise with things you had around. I made my own money out of white paper for counting, buttons for counters etc. I think it might be handy to have pattern blocks but they also could be made. This was my second attempt at saxon in the lower grades and we really enjoyed it!

I agree with Marie. I know there are even templates for pattern blocks on line. They can be printed onto cardstock and cut out. I think you would just have to google it. Honestly though, while I know they were used frequently in the Saxon 1 book, I don't remember using them for Saxon 3. (We only used Saxon 3 one time though so it could be a memory loss issue!)

I used Saxon 3 without the manipulatives. As I recall I had some sort of homeschool set that had one or two big spiral wound teacher's books, plus two paperback workbooks. The only problem we ever had was some of the workbook problems were classroom oriented ( for example, make a graph of every kid in the class' favorite animal) but I would either just make up the data or base it on our family. Overall I thought it was a very good program.
