Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am always so affirmed when study after study proves what CM knew to be true in how children learn.

I believe it. I was fascinated by the Finn model of schooling as detailed in the excellent book: The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got That Way.

Lindsay, that is thought-provoking... I forget to take breaks when I'm working with my 11 year old youngest (his older siblings got plenty of breaks in the normal course of the day because there was always so much going on). I probably need to plan for recess with him!

I found another article on the Finland school system:

26 Amazing Facts about FInland's Educational System

Some of it reminds me of homeschooling.

We visited Finland when the kids were small and stayed with a family with a 7 year old. She went to school for two hours in the morning then was given a hot lunch- roast and mashed potatoes and veggies- at the school. She was learning to trace her letters! I loved it!!!

Great little article and very thought provoking. This has come up in conversation a couple times since I read it.... Such a good reminder for this upcoming year. Last year, I was really falling into the mindset of "getting things done" and lost a lot of WHY we are homeschooling. We need to those breaks to refresh and relax our brains, and to keep a structure in place so we don't fall into the trap of "plowing through".... Anyone have any good advice on this? The first thing that comes to mind is a schedule that maps breaks out and work times out, but honestly, I am not a schedule person, and it always seems to get thrown out the window when the first bump in the road happens (which, of course, usually occurs the first morning of implementing it!)
