Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 10 and 12 year old want to do a study of the 2 above books--Does anyone have any good ideas or resources available to do this. I'm looking for something to really explain the book-and/or some sort of hands on project to go along with it.

Thanks for any advice.

Ignatius Press has this blog - Tolkien and Lewis which has links to resources that might be helpful - books, videos, articles, etc.

I know there is a unit study book for Lewis's works but can't think of one for Tolkien. Hmmmm.....

St. Benedict Press offers Catholic Courses - and there is a course on The Hobbit done by Joseph Pearce and another is The Hidden Meaning in The Lord of the Rings: Theological Vision in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings also by Joseph Pearce.

Both courses are excellent, though they're above a 10 yo (maybe not the 12 yo depending on the child and his aptitude)....but I mention them in case they'd be good background for you and might springboard some other ideas. They're excellent for high school age students.

From what I hear using annotated editions of these books can really lead to a lot of depth. I'm looking forward to using annotated books when my kids are a bit older.
