Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am wondering if any of you have had success with a spelling program or if writing/dictation and some spelling rules is enough.

I did browse through the hits and misses, but did not notice a lot about spelling. I would appreciate your thoughts here!

Do you use a program or system? Thanks so much!

Jill

The Natural Speller is my favorite source for grades 1-8. I use it orally and do about 5 to 10 words per day. Very simple and easy to use with lots of great ideas to make the spelling exercises fun.

We love All About Spelling, the kids all love it, and even my daughter that attends Catholic school asks to use it because it helps her so much (she has dyslexia).

Just wanted to second All About Spelling. It does take some mom time, but I have found it to be worth it. The kids get a great foundation.

Spelling Wisdom by Simply Charlotte Mason. We've just started book 1 this year with my third grader, but starting in the Fall he'll be using it for dictation.

Thank you all for your replies here. I will be looking at your suggestions as I try to figure out which path I should take!

By the way, I am continuing this conversation at Language Arts Comes Alive because maybe that is where it should have been in the first place?!

Thanks again!

We've always been copywork/dictation people. This last year I did use a formal spelling program with my 3rd and 4th graders, but didn't notice a particular improvement in spelling that could be traced to that program. So next year we'll be back to copywork/dictation (basically applying the Spelling Wisdom principles to our own copywork choices).
