Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please let me know what you think of the Teaching Company lectures on the Ancient World.

If you have watched a complete lecture series, would you recommend it? Which one(s)?

Any that you would caution against?

There are several courses available on the Ancient World. I am thinking of starting with Ancient Rome but am willing to start elsewhere if there is a better course.

Thanks in advance,

My husband and I have watched Great Battles of the Ancient World and enjoyed it. I have used some of the lectures with my kids too, but I had to stop and discuss/rehash to make sure they were following it. But my kids are only elementary age. I don't remember any objectionable content in that one. This is one we enjoyed and I would recommend.

I have also used the 12 lecture version of the Ancient Egypt series with elementary age kids and that went over well. The instructor is quite good and more accessible for younger kids. The only objectionable content there is in the last couple minutes of the Hatshepsut lecture where he talks about some graffiti found in her tomb. He also speculates about Ramses the Great being the pharaoh at the time of Moses. He speaks in favor of this and I thought he did a good job presenting the evidence. I liked this series a lot.

I have also watched the Ancient Greece series and there are definitely some objectionable lectures there! Some of them I ended up skipping because it was more than I wanted to know and it wasnt stuff I wanted in my head. I thought it was a little too much interpretation of history through a modern lens and not enough of "here's what happened".

I have watched the first 10 lectures or so of the Ancient Rome series and found it a little dry. One of these days I'll finish it...

I'm not sure what the ages of your children are, but for upper elementary through middle school, I love the courses geared for High School by Linwood Thompson. There is also an American history course.

These lectures can supplement any history program. Prof. Thompson dresses up and acts out the experiences and points of view of many people, both ordinary and famous, who illustrate their period of history. He's a king, a serf, a Protestant, a Catholic. He hits the key points of Western History in a secular but not anti-religious fashion. My kids have enjoyed these!

The college level courses are almost all going to have some material that might be inappropriate for younger listeners or raise difficult moral or theological questions, especially the ones dealing with Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and the period of the Reformation. If you have upper level high school students, then you might want to tackle these issues. If you decide to use the college courses, I recommend you watch the videos with your child and then you will be in a better position to discuss questionable material.

I have to add that Prof. Thompson's courses really work better for students younger than high school age. They also provide an opportunity for practicing note-taking if you supply the proper spelling for names of persons and places of note.
