What are your favorite short skill building lessons for older students? Here are a few we're enjoying right now:
Spelling: pretest, activities, study, quiz
Grammar: review, currently Simply Grammar
Handwriting: online worksheets
Vocabulary: vocabulary.com, Word Ladders
Spanish: vocabulary flashcards
Math: flashcards, games
Art: art game cards

We tend to stack activities, do several back first thing in the morning. Some I have designated as "daily" for each student based on individual needs. Some we do in the afternoon and some we rotate 1-3 times a week. We use a timer.
The boys can easily stay focused and it is amazing how much can be reviewed, learned, and accomplished in 10 minutes. And many of these skills are easy to accomplish independently and/or delegate to dad.
I'm working on adding to our "10 minute basket" to include history, geography, religion, science, ...and more! Any suggestions? Thanks!

history -
** 10 minute addition to Book of Centuries/timeline (choose one figure or event from the week's reading to add)
geography -
** 10 minute map quiz -- PREP WORK: choose a country, state, region...grab your atlas and use a post-it note to flag that region page in your atlas. make several copies of an appropriate blank map of the region and put them in a folder which is stored inside the cover of the atlas. introduce region via atlas. ASSIGNMENT: spend 5 minutes studying assigned region (this may be countries of a continent, states, rivers, geographical features....not all at once, pick one)...after studying for 5 min. CLOSE ATLAS....spend 5 minutes labeling blank map with as many features as you can remember.
religion -
** 10 minute Catechism quiz.
** 10 minutes apologetics work (I like the Friendly Defenders cards Jodie recommends)
** 10 minutes to research a simple topic (given by you or determined from current events) in the CCC and present summary (this is great for an older student so that they become familiar with looking things up in the CCC!!!)
science -
** 10 minutes watching Periodic Table of Elements in video (enough time to watch one element)
** view one Molecular Video by Univ Nottingham
** 10 minute nature walk - 10 minute sketch of something/anything seen on nature walk (I know that's 20 min, but it works out well when I assign concrete times for this for my boys especially)
** 10 minute anatomy quiz - following same method as map quiz. this can be done with any science area that can be *mapped*....think - parts of a flower, systems of the body, layers of the earth, planets of the solar system, etc......find a reference or book with a "map" or image of whatever you're studying, introduce, study for 5 min, narrate (draw/label) on paper for 5 min. repeat 2 - 4 times/week.
language arts -
** I can get so much bang for my 10 minutes out of one dictation lesson --> spelling, mechanics, grammar, reading aloud skills (enunciation, emphasis), penmanship, root words (love using ABC's and All Their Tricks for this), suffixes/prefixes, and STILL have something to discuss based on the dictation selection and the thoughts conveyed there!!! This is my top pick for most efficiently spent 10 minutes in my day!

This is great! I have a sixth grader now. A "ten minute basket"... love the idea. I never thought to give it a name, but we've been doing some of these with my oldest already. I'm taking notes
